Release Date?

Did you go back and listen to the video? See my updated poste above. He says "this month".

Yeah, he says "probably this month" but it is also in reference to the "tegra zone" which could easily launch a little prior to the phones themselves. Re-watching the video kind of makes me a little shakier on my own estimates. I think we will see it mid-feb because these little aspects like the tegra zone should be ready to go. If this is launching the 5th or thereabouts, moto should already be shipping AT&T units to distribute to have ready for launch, there would be a lot less "probably"-s and just the usual, unmodified vague language. I hope i'm wrong, but after re-reading a lot of the posts and hands-on vids and such, I am beginning to think that they are still optimizing aspects of the device. That would really suck.
Although I am certain it will launch not too long after the VeriPhone, even if they have to address something(s) with post-launch updates (like tegra zone).

How could the tegra zone launch prior to the phones when A. It will need a tegra phone to run what it offers and B. It will only be available on tegra devices?

It can come out before devices to support it because it will only show up for (or be on those devices), so it won't impact anything else if it does launch early. It will have to be finalized first if any special apps atte going to be submitted to it, and if the Atrix is supposed to ship with the tegra zone pre-loaded, it will have to be release ready before the phones ship...

The android market launched before the release of the G1, people were playing with it and submitting to it from the early SDK AOSP release of the general Android source code

You are forgetting one part of what the NVIDIA rep said. He says..."Probably this month when we get phones out." He clearly ties the two (Tegra Zone and Phones being out) into one time frame. While they may not launch on the exact same day - they will be very close to each other.

Remember - this isn't just a huge product launch for AT&T - this is a huge product launch for Motorola and NVIDIA. I seriously doubt that this launch will be anything but spectacular and that we will see all the products (Tegra Zone, accessories, etc) be available at the same time.

Dude, I'm not trying to be a negative nancy

Well you are doing just that. The only thing we have in writing from AT&T and Motorola is Q1 2011. But in their presentations - AT&T, Motorola and NVIDIA have all indiciated this phone will be available in January/early Feb time frame.

AT&T has started to advertise the phone, their product page is up with plan pricing, accessories have been included in the marketing information and all the reps are saying end of January time frame.

Why go out of your way to try and prove a March launch? I just don't get it.

Yeah, so it's just an .apk file (application) like the market itself, that will have to be finished for the launch to caine on already shipped phones. It has to be completed first, unless we download it from the market- which would be feasible... Hopefully that's the case...

I'm gonna say it will just be inside any tegra 2 phone. No matter what it is it will be pre loaded in the phone

So yeah, if it is pre-loaded, it must be done and ready before the phones leave the factory, well before launch...

I wouldn't doubt that they would like it to be pre-loaded on all tegra phones, but I don't think that is a requirement per se. In the following link it says "Coming soon to the Android Market"

Tegra Zone

There we go, the phones can launch without it then (and possibly sooner) whew! Had myself psyched out there for a bit!

I haven't been able to keep up with the news lately (way to busy) but I hope it comes out in February, although I will have to wait for MWC to see the possible Galaxy S2. A 4.3" dual-core (not sure if it will be Tegra or not) would be tempting if it keeps up the 1GB of RAM specs. Motorola has become better but I am still not sure about their phones. I will get the Atrix if there is nothing better on the horizon but I am not in a huge rush (considering that in the middle of February there will be many announcements).

Why go out of your way to try and prove a March launch? I just don't get it.

I wasn't trying to prove anything other than the validity of our own hopeful argument for the sooner rather than later timeframe. The use of the phrase "coming weeks" as evidence is extremely weak as it is open to interpretation and projections (my undergrad is in Poli Sci, I am extremely familiar with rhetoric and carefully phrased spin used to appease the masses of hopeful people- us- while protecting the speaker from whatever may happen- the potentiality of a later release), and it just smacks of that same sort of damage-control rhetoric. What good is reasoning an argument on shaky (at best) evidence? I have just been through all of this sort of hopeful reading into situations with the whole Samsung "froyogate" and GPS issues, and while Moto is better than Samsung about support, we had the same hopeful "reading into" every phrase Samsung tweeted or reviewers said looking for a fix that was more akin to clutching at straws.
Now that that quote mentioning that the Tegra Zone will launch via the market has surfaced, it tells me that the phone will launch without it (aka potentially sooner than "probably this month") and we will be able to download it for free once available.

As I've stated before though, I really think mid-February makes the most sense, because there's the iPhone on Verizon crap dropping around then, and apparently now Sprint has something going down around the 7th. AT&T could easily wait for all that buzz to loose its steam for a couple of days, then make a major launch to draw attention back to them. I think the whole "churn" fear (going to Verizon for the iPhone) so-we-should-launch-the-Atrix-pre-emptively argument is really moot though, because AT&T will take customers back until 30 days, and perhaps that is the real reason Verizon dropped its return period back to 14 days, to cut down on reverse-churn, so to speak. I really think that AT&T's best move is to launch either the 5th/6th as @AndreaCristiano 's Best Buy contacts, or the 12th/13th. Of course, if the VeriPhone is publicly available on the 13th, I could see them waiting until that following friday for a big launch event, then it being in stores that weekend/monday. My AT&T contact says no training materials or signage has arrived yet, but he did say that sometimes it won't come until right before, so even that is shaky evidence at this point. I'm just hoping AT&T is smart about this phone and doesn't blow the hype for it by waiting forever to launch it and miss its opportune time...

Thanks, same here, I have a couple of other friends I can pester too, but the manager is the best connected and I've known him the longest, so I trust his reply more. He did say that he thought the HTC one was launching pretty close to the same time (and maybe sooner) but that the Atrix will be the "big" deal...

Also, they got training on the 4G transition last week (HSPA+ vs LTE), and he said that the DC/Baltimore metro areas could be a test market for the LTE, but he had no info on that directly, just that they were to expect customers to see it in our market "this year" ... So whatever that's worth...

im interested to see if they inconspicuously drop the HTC or will they give that a bit of a push as well

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but my friend just confirmed that it looks like a march 1st release date...

I have a friend who's an ATT regional sales manager who said February 13th is the date. Lines up with ATT's usual Sunday launch of new phones, and I trust the person, so add it to the pile of rumors. I know I'll be waiting in line on launch day.

This isn't true. I am somewhat familiar with how the information flow and sources works. And I can tell you that sources speak when it suites them. They will not speak to someone they do not trust, so a friend nullifies that. Second, there is usually some benefit to them as a person. Could be financial, or could be to strengthen a relationship for future benefits. You never know.

So to make the blanket statement that people in the know don't speak is utterly false. Half the blogs on the internet (including sports, financial, etc) wouldnt exist without sources that will speak. And often.

Then tell me why all the people who know someone who knows, have different dates they can "confirm"?

The people who really know, are not saying...simple as that.

Is the 2/13 or 3/1 date correct? Maybe. Is it confirmed? No. Is it really that simple? Yes.
