Release Date?

rumor going around that best buy will have them in there stores October 24th but not for sale yet you talk to them nice i bet they let you see it if thats the case. i know i used to work there and we were always playing with the stuff before we were supposed to.... like kids in a candy shop

Was told by rep at Verizon store in Maryland suburbs of DC that there was a good chance phones would be in the store mid-week this week (i.e., around Wed or Thursday Oct. 28 or 29).

Droidnut,

I ain't no expert in this ... just like everyone else interested in this, one hears a lot of different things .... from what I read on various blogs and such, there may be TWO releases of Android phones for Verizon coming up ... either both of them from Motorola or perhaps one from Motorola and the other manufactured by HTC ..... Seems that one is out by end of October and the other is either being released (or perhaps just officially announced) in early November.

The guy at my local Verizon store didn't say 100% definite they'll have the Droid phone this Wednesday -- he just hinted at it pretty strongly and suggested I check back on Wednesday.

So that's all I know, or think I know

I heard they are suppose to announce it Oct 28th and the have a pic of an ad in the san Diego paper saying it will be available Nov 6th I hope I hope yay I can't wait:D

Phonearena.com has a section on verizon with a section on upcoming phones and they have an estimated release date of Nov 6th on the HTC and the Moto unoffical of corse lol

I am guessing the Droid will be announced tomorrow and you will be able to pre-order it and get it on the 6th. Or maybe they will have online only sales starting tomorrow. I am not holding my breath on tomorrow.

I can't wait! For sure the official announcement is tomorrow and it can be purchased on the 6th of November. The question I have is, "Can I order it tomorrow and have it in my pocket by Thursday?

I would not count on Midnight. I would expect a morning press release.

Maybe for a huge press release, though the website is already coded. When that thing counts all the way down, the page will update, and meta to another site with all the specs etc. Count on it.

My approach is, I don't want to order one or commit to buying one until I can hold one in my hand and play around with it, make sure I'm comfortable with the keyboard, etc.

That's more important to me than whether I have the thing tomorrow or this week or in a week or two!

I've found that with all gadgets, especially compact ones, it pays to get hands-on with me to see if they're "right" for me ...

Agreed...the faster they have a demo in store, the better.
Though Verizon always gives you 30 days with the phone. So keep your old one. If you don't like it, you can always return it.

Judging by what I've heard thus far from BGR, I'm fairly confident I can just just walk in, and purchase it without fear of buyer remorse.

The problem is that the website updates the countdown depending on your computer clock. So who's midnight?

How do you know the website is coded to update? I have seen these things before and more often than not, they do not change over instantly.

Just got off the phone with Verizon store in the DC area. Clerk now says the new phone they have as of Wed. Oct. 28 will NOT be Android-based. I think he said it's a Storm (that's Blackberry, perhaps? I don't really know).

He did say they expect announcements within days about not only the Motorola Droid but also an HTC Android phone, and thinks it likely they'll both launch the same time. When I said "in a matter of weeks" he said "more like days, not weeks."

I think it'd be great if they have two Android models - Motorola and HTC - on-hand at the same time. Competition, choice, variety, all that good stuff. Though after reading BGR's early review of the Motorola, I'm getting pretty excited about that one (see Motorola Droid Preview Boy Genius Report )

BGR even says the Motorola unit works well AS A PHONE!!! (now that's what I call the "cake under the icing"!!!)

The Storm 2 launches tomorrow. I doubt they would have the Droid launch tomorrow as well.

Well I've called quite a few local verizon stores considering they are being trained this week on android phones. For the most part I got the typical "Oh no we dont have a release date..." but eventually I got some luck and have even gotten a manager to tell me that both the HTC Droid "Eris" and the Motorola Droid will be sold on Nov. 6th as a standard morning release, no midnight releases have been validated for the stores. I know where I'll be next friday morning :D
