[RELEASED] The 4.3 inch "Thunderbolt" aka "Mecha" aka "Incredible HD" from HTC...beyond coming soon!

There will always be those who still buy based on aesthetics, but that makes less difference now with this new generation of Android devices. I see the iPhone now as more of a child's toy, and the momentum is on our side. The iPhone going forward will become less and less significant as Android build a commanding lead regardless of carrier.

A lot of us over at the Crackberry forums were saying the same thing for a long time. Many of the benefits of the iPhone have already been covered by others here. Familiar interface, strong app library, desirable feature set (for at-large consumers, not us Smartphone snobs), and brand recognition. It serves its purpose and hits a very large market segment.

What would be interesting is to see how iPhone sales would do if they offered more than 1 model (I'm counting the 16GB and 32GB as 1 model). Some of the reasons Android and BB have outsold iPhone are the limited availability of the iPhone and the number of different models available from other OSs. I don't think - but I could be wrong - that any single smartphone has outsold the iphone in a straight up comparison.

Whatever the case, I've already decided that I'm dropping Blackberry and my Storm 2 when these LTE Android phones start releasing on VZW. BB has absolutely nothing interesting (to me) in the pipeline right now and I'm definitely excited by the options with the Android OS.

Welcome. I myself came from Blackberry. Check out my site for some pointers, or search here for some great tips on switching over.

I don't care that it's not a dual core I'll wait on some more impressive dual core phones to come out in 10-12 months when I'm eligable again after buying the Thunderbolt on a 1yr contract .
I'm fine with my incredible I just need a bigger screen that was really my only must have , I love typing on the Fascinate I had and the EVO (to bad the Fascinate was junk) I even considered getting a single Sprint line for the EVO but the screen while very comfortable lacked the brightness of my Incredible that and Sprint gets absolutly no signal in my apartment .

So not only am I gettin a bigger screen on the Thunderbolt I'm getting a more efficiant processor capable of higher clock speeds , a better GPU , more RAM , 4G and a FFC . Sign me up

My thoughts exactly. It's funny how people are knocking the TB for not being dual core when it's still a very good phone and should be able to hold it's own at least for another year. I've been upgrading every year or sooner for the past 3 years or so anyway.

Very good points... really, I hope I haven't been overly critical of the Thunderbolt... though the specs are a little too much like my Incredible for my liking, I'm sure this is a very capable and awesome phone, and if I had one I'm sure I'd love it as much or more than my Dinc.

I guess is the knowing that I can't afford every new latest and greatest phone, so I'm really trying to make my next upgrade count for as much as I can.

One thing I think is for sure... HTC seems to be the most *root friendly* and *mod friendly* manufacturers out right now, so barring the possibility that they could pull a Motorola on us in the future, I will likely stick with HTC - even if the hardware specs miss the mark a little bit (compared to the likes of Bionic or Atrix) - because being able to mod my phone will more than make up for whatever might be lacking with the hardware.

Totally agree with this. The Thunderbolt will be a HUGE upgrade over my current phone. If it's true that the TB is going to drop in March and the Bionic isn't going to drop until June, I don't think I can stand to wait that much longer. Plus I'm sure there will be PLENTY of dual core phones to choose from in the next year or so. The Atrix has already set the bar for dual core phones so I'd rather sit on a TB on a 1-year contract and wait for a Verizon phone that rivals the Atrix.

Haha, so much for AT&T promoting being able to "talk and surf the web at the same time". I wonder what their next gimmick is going to be to counter Verizon?

"Uhhh we have BOTH kinds of 4G! It doesn't really matter but it makes us sound more significant, lulz."

The HTC Incredible was released on 4/29/10, training started on 4/14/10 (from what I can tell via google search).

Take it with a HUGE grain of salt. :)

The battery life in all Android phones is gonna suck until the dual core cpus come out. I've just come to deal with it.

Dual core has little to do with it. In fact, a lot of code would have to be rewritten to take advantage of the second cpu. And I'm not sure if Android natively supports multiple cores, though I am sure they thought that far ahead.

The bigger issues are die size, power consumption of the screen used, and LTE chip efficiency. Since I'm pretty certain that dual core wont be released on CDMA alone (meaning no LTE), whatever form we get dual core in will likely be held back (in terms of battery life) by another component of the phone that's probably a first generation part and not as likely to be power efficient. Any power efficiency gained by dual core may be negated by other less efficient parts.

According to the articles I've read, it has nothing to do with code. It has more to do with the cpu cores needing less power to run at the same speed as a single core. Just more efficient is all. I understand what you mean by other components being less efficient, but that is throwing a wrench into the equation. I'm saying all things being equal a dual core cpus would help battery life.

According to that article: " According to our sources, regional Verizon reps are confirming to their clients that the current schedule is to have both the unnamed Samsung 4G LTE device and the Thunderbolt out at the same time."

Wouldn't that mean that no one can claim to be Verizon's first 4G device? ;)

False advertising?

I was really excited for this phone because its 4G, but the more I think about it the less enthusiastic I get about it. I now want a dual core Honeycomb handset. Hopefully something like that is released Q2 of this year?

i thought honeycomb was for tablets only...

"He stops short of confirming that Honeycomb itself will be heading to Android phones, but says that the design decisions seen in Honeycomb are "absolutely the future of Android."

this was all i could find on it in that article, so where does it say that it will be coming to phones?

Would say that chances are honeycomb will NOT be coming to phones. Thats just from what i've seen demo'ed via the xoom tablet and purely a guess(probably not even an educated one at that)

And honestly i don't want nothing to do with the first couple dual-core phones. You just know they are gonna be buggy at first, plus code WILL need to be tweaked to take full advantage of both cores. I'm betting it will be a trickle down effect in terms of hardware. They will put in dual-cores then decide some other piece of hardware needs updated and that in turn will make some other piece of hardware have compatibility issues(or something like that)
Let them release dualies (all the manufactors) work the bugs out, redesign tons more of the phones hardware, THEN i'll see whats up. Till then the Thunderbolt is a mighty fine upgrade (for me anyway, lol)
