Not a dumb question at all.
As you'll probably discover the Desire is crippled by poor internal memory issues. . You can get around it by rooting the phone, repartitioning the internal memory to move some space across for apps and then installing a custom rom. In the end I went with Mildwild V5.
It is a bit quicker, although TBH my Desire wasn't slow after I put an AOSP rom on it and got rid of HTC sense bloatware.
Hi, My Desire S is stuck on Android 2.3.3 (unable to Update as OTA's state 'Modified System Software' after I meddled around not really knowing what I was doing.
Would love to get rid of bloated Software and innumerable apps constantly logging themselves in an killing the battery.
Can you tell me (very simply) How you achieved the above, I really would Appreciate it.
Cheers (About to tear what little hair I have left out)
