Remove Superflous Icons/Apps

jcman001

Lurker
How can I remove apps that came with my phone that I do not want? I could care less about "NFL Mobile", "Verizon Tones", "Trip Advisor", that just clutter up my screen, not to mention use storage space.

Depending on the phone, you usually just long press them on homescreen (desktop) and either get an option to remove or a X or trash can to drag them to.
As for removing the actual app (software) from your phone, if they came pre installed then you can't get rid of them without "rooting" (hacking) the phone as they're installed in the system.
This can void your warranty and doesn't free up any storage space in the way you'd imagine.
Best to get them off your homescreen then go to settings, apps, ALL, find the app and hit "disable"
Only do this with gimmicky apps like the NFL one, etc that you mentioned

Oh and welcome to the forum
Tell us what phone you have

Hi jcman001, welcome to the site :)

To remove preinstalled apps you'd have to root your phone, which voids the warranty.

However you can disable them so you don't see their icons, although this wont free up space:
1. Go to your phones Settings menu.
2. Tap Apps (or Applications).
3. Go to the All tab, you might need to swipe right/left to get to it.
4. Scroll down to the app you want to disable and tap it.
5. If Force Stop can be chosen tap it first, then tap Disable.

Be careful as disabling some system apps could cause your phone to not function correctly.

EDIT: Funky beat me to it while I was typing :)

Sorry - I have the S4 Mini

It appears Towelroot does for for the S4 Mini. However, your model (Int'l or Verizon) and Android version could come into play though.
I've not used it on any device, but it seems to be quite popular:

If you are comfortable doing it, then with root access using ES File Explorer, Titanium Backup or Root Explorer, you can delete all the bloat you like.

Just remember removing these apps just frees up memory in the system partition. To take advantage of that you'll have to install some of your apps as system apps
