Help Remove text notification?

Is it possible to remove the notification from the top bar when you get a text? Lately I've been getting annoyed that if a friend is using my phone, they'll read my text message as it scrolls through it on the notification bar.

open the text program/menu/settings/notifications/uncheck.

Wouldn't that be the first place you would check?

Thanks man. I didn't even think to look at the settings for the individual program.. I've been dogging around in the main settings page for 30 minutes (Facepalm at myself)

fwiw, in Handcent you can also choose to not display the message text in the notification area as opposed to eliminating the notifications entirely.

Yeah, I'm a little disappointed that it's all or nothing.. who thought that would be a good idea?

Use Handcent, it's much better than stock.
