Removing built-in apps

Hey, I recently bought the HTC DHD and there are a bunch of applications already installed on there that I would rather not have, for example 'Amazon MP3' and 'Friend Stream' etc.

I think they're permanent as the uninstall button is greyed out when I go to remove them. So am I right in saying that I need to 'root' my phone in order to get rid of them?

This is my first Android phone and I'm trying to get it to look and operate exactly how I want it to... really enjoying the process :)

Thanks, Mike.

I advise you not to remove them unless you want to customise it. People are having trouble installing updates because the stock applications are missing. So I guess leave them on unless you want to be a bit daring and get involved in the whole customising your device, i.e. rooting.

Well that's a good point. I just don't want things on my screen that I'll never use. And I'd prefer to update easily when they come available. I actually just came across an option in LauncherPro that allows me to hide apps from the app drawer (took me a while to realise where the LP options were... ha) - just what I need.

Is there an app similar to the Task Manager in Windows? i.e. something that will allow me to see all apps currently running, how much cpu/ram etc. each is using? I'd like to check that the apps I hide aren't using the phone resources too much :)

Thanks, Mike.
