Root Removing Kernels

I flashed MikG 2.57 a few days ago and got Aggressive Freedom kernel to help with battery life. Unfortunately, it hasn't helped one bit and I'd like to try and flash a new kernel.

So my question is:
-can I flash a separate kernel over this one and it will override this one?
-if I can't flash over it or it won't remove this kernel, how can I remove the kernel from the ROM?

I have a backup that I did right before I flashed the kernel so I could easily go back but I've got some information that I really don't want to lose and I don't want to go with the hassle of using Titanium and having to manually redo all of those backups and restores so...is there a way that I can remove the kernel without using a backup? If not, I'll just use the backup and flash a new kernel from there.

Yes, you can flash a different kernel over this one and it will replace the current kernel you're running.

I ran the same ROM, same kernel, same result. Chop Suey has been better for me.

I don't know of any shortcuts, but if you were to re-wipe and flash the rom again, it would install it's own kernel. Check Mik's forum, maybe he has the kernel posted somewhere on there? If you have Mik's rom, you have the app for the forums.

Thanks! Yeah, I knew that was another way. I was looking for ways that wouldn't result in data loss if possible though.

EDIT: How has your battery been with Chop Suey? I'm really disappointed that we don't have more SBC kernels for Sense cause I got great usage when I was on AOSP ROMs. And this Freedom one made me mad that it didn't do anything for me except probably drain my battery even less. I noticed that it would be on the charger, get up to 100% and then stop charging that it would be super hot and would be at like 85% or something when taken off and it would freeze!...terrible kernel or maybe I got a terrible version.

EDIT: Not looking so hot again... I took it off the charger for less than 3 minutes and it dropped from 100% to 89%...I guess this is the sacrifice for having such a smooth running ROM with all the nice gadgets and gizmos.

just wipe dalvik cache and cache and re-flash the rom. you will not loose data and it will replace the current kernel with the one that comes with the rom. or you should have just made a nandroid backup prior to flashing the new kernel. that way if you do not like the kernel or there is issues with it and you want to go back, you can then just do a nandroid restore.

Thanks ocnbrze! Well I got Chop Suey last night and it is working pretty well especially after that app that Huge Noob suggested. I'll report back here tonight to give an update to how all is going with this new kernel and app.

I took it off the charger for less than 3 minutes and it dropped from 100% to 89%...

You have to remember when your phone is charging and says it it at 100% it is not actually at 100%.

Any kernel (except SBC currently only for AOSP ROMS) will charge the phone up to 100%. At this point the phone stops charging and discharges to 90%. Once it hits 90% it will start charging again and the cycle repeats untill you take the phone off the charger at some random point in the process.

So while your phone says it is at 100% it is actually anywhere between 90%-100% and that fast drop off you see if from your phone correcting itself to the true charge on the battery.

The most probable explanation for your 3 minutes to 89% was that you were much closer to the 90-91% when you took it off the charger than you were to the 98-99%.

One way to counter this is to take the phone off the charger, play a game for 5-10 minutes till the battery is displaying below 90% and then plug it back in and let it top off.

Anytime you take the phone off the charger as soon as the light turns green (assuming sense ROM) the phone is at the true 100%.

Yeah, I remember you saying that in the other thread.

I guess I've been so used to SBC that it's hard to tell what's good and what's not anymore.

But the update on this kernel and app is that my phone is getting better battery performance. It's certainly not like SBC but it's much better and I'm willing to deal with it until something comes up that seems better. Thank you all for the help. Much appreciated. The phone didn't lose battery too quickly but slowly like it'd take a good 30 seconds to drop from one percentage to the next. Plus the phone doesn't overheat so that's also a huge plus.
