Root Removing telephony.db to fix MMS?

First off I'd like to say Hello, been lurking around here since I got the MT the week it was released. I'd also like to give props to all the devs for sharing their work. You guys are amazing, and have literally turned a POS phone into a powerhouse. A big "thank you" to you all...

Anyways, I read (can't remember if it was on here or XDA) that removing telephony.db from /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases was a way to fix MMS. Sending/receiving MMS was intermittent from day 1, and I just figured it was part of "getting what you pay for" service. But as soon as I removed telephony.db, it was like VM upgraded my service to rockstar status! Absolutely no probs with MMS. This worked on stock as well as every ROM I've tried to date, including CM7 which I currently run (huge thanks TG!!!).

So my question is... does anyone else do this? If so, do you have the same results? Anyone know what telephony.db even is/does? Any reasons to not remove it? I've been removing it for months, it's the first thing I do every time I flash a new ROM, and I have seen zero ill effects by doing so. But I'm curious to see what other people think of this practice.

Again, I take no credit for this fix, and I really appreciate whoever figured this out. Thanks...

Technically MMS "worked" I guess, just not very well. I could always send pics, but I would only receive about 1/2 the pics I was sent. Forget about video, never worked in either direction. I figured this was due to VM's sub-par service, or maybe just coverage in my particular location. I tried the "EvDo" fix and swapping PRL's to no avail. But as soon as I removed telephony.db and rebooted, everything worked like a champ!

I realize not everyone has problems with MMS. Plenty of people never experienced problems with GPS, camera, battery, etc either. On the other hand, plenty of people DO have these problems, and from what I've read I think there are plenty of people with MMS problems as well. I'm just throwing this out there as something for people to try who are experiencing MMS trouble. And maybe get a little info as to what telephony.db is/does as well...

Hm. I'm going to try this, my MT never really had MMS working, until I messed with the APN settings for MMS. But then I wiped it, and re-installed CM7 and it stopped working. I'll report back with results. EDIT: Oh my. I love you. It works. I love you. Have my babies?

I removed it too. My MMS is working way better.
I moved it to my SD card though just in case anything was using it and we find out we need it after all...

Thanks!

I did some searching online to see what I could find on this and the telephony.db stores APN info. This fix has came up in fixing MMS on various phones in different threads.

In one thread they say to reboot after you delete the file, I tried that and checked the original location and the file is back so either replaced or rewritten somehow in the system?
maybe back with better info so MMS will work.

All the threads just say to delete it, but I can't find much in depth info on what actually is happening.

Mms is not functional I've called vm. Batt pull data reset recover to stock rom tryed 3rd party app and reset mdn. And delete data file telephony .db I'm stumped I think its virgins issue .... idk anyone with any ideas? ?? Triumph

I keep searching for a solution and continue to reflash everything from the stock rom over again to make sure I'm doing everything right.

Many people seem to not get this problem but my MMS just won't send.
I need this for work and if I use email, the message comes out garbled for some reason.

I enjoy my CM7 and CM9, but I hate having to go back to stock every morning and then back to CM when I get off work.

You have mobile data (3g) enabled when doing this? Not wifi, but 3g?

Are you using a 3rd party messaging app?

No. I've tried GoSMS because when I searched I saw that that worked for somebody, but didn't work for me.

I'm trying again right now with a complete factory reset.
My earlier restore was a modified stock reset, just a few extra apps like gingerbreak.

Also trying the new A0.6.2.0 release

Are you using anything like titanium backup or the like to restore data?

No, I've just been using CWM 5.0.2.6

Do I need to install Google Talk?

Hmm maybe I'm using an older version of GAPPS. What is the latest build for this phone?

Hah this should be an episode of Reboot.

No, I am just trying to rule out any app/data issues that might cause it.

Does this happen on a completely fresh install after a complete wipe?

I've been wiping every time I go back.

This is my first attempt in real time on a COMPLETELY fresh install. I just loaded CW9 0.6.2 a couple seconds ago. Trying right now.

Edit: Well the system is running very smoothly, but wtf is with this keyboard.

Ok. Messaging doesn't work on 6.2. Going back to CM7.

I meant does it happens with a fresh install (not a nandroid) before installing anything other than gapps?

Yes

Yah, it's pissing me off.

Okay, stock rom. MMS Working.
Factory Reset
CWM7 + Gapps Install.
Reboot.
MMS Sent but not received. After a few minutes the messages won't send out.

That isn't a normal issue with the ROM. It has to be something on your end. Or possibly a network issue in your area.

I figured, I'm doing something wrong.

Can't be network issues. It always works on stock rom and never works on CM7 or CM9.

I'm going back to the drawing board.

Anothing thing is, my phone's touchscreen is unresponsive while plugged via USB now and the computer cannot read the files. Must remove SD card.

What cm7 version are you using?
