Root Rename backups

Is it ok to rename backups in CW to something I can remember what it is. I would do this by going into ES File Explorer open clockworkmod backups long hold and rename. Would that be the way to do it. Thanks

It might be safer to rename them in ROM manager rather than directly renaming the directories with a file manager. ROM manager certainly is just doing the same thing, but it might also be changing other information elsewhere.

is there a way to rename Amon ra backups like using rom manager for clockwork recovery?

I don't think so. You can take your chances and rename the backup with a file manager. It might work, but it also might give you errors. I find it's easier to just make a text file with a map of what's what. It takes all of a few seconds, and it's guaranteed to not break anything.

Opps did it all ready... I will back up rom before flashing a new one and I have the orginal backup on my computer...that should be ok right.

That should be fine. It might still work fine after renaming them. Try this - make another nandroid backup, and don't change the name. Go restore one of the nandroid backups that you renamed. If it works, great. If not, well...there you go. Either way, just restore the newest nandroid backup that you didn't rename, and you'll be back where you were. Sometimes it works to rename them, sometimes it doesn't. As long as you don't put spaces in them as bvbull200 said, you'll probably be ok.

I will do it now, I will do back up of current rom (which I love) then reboot orginal backup which I renamed. I have never flashed a back up and there is nothing in rooting for dummies so, can you help a brother out:D

lol, sure. It's exactly the opposite of backing one up. In recovery, just select the option to restore (don't try to flash a zip). You will be given a list of available backups. Just choose the one you want.

Cool beans let the backing up begin:cool:

Around 3-5 minutes, or so. Don't panic if it takes up to 10. How long has it been going?

EDIT: Btw, if you were going to have any issues with a renamed backup, it would more than likely error out right away.

You know I'm thinking I'm glad there were no android phones when I was young...For I may still be single lol

This is friggin tooo much fun...omg it's back to new lol...can you mess the phone up by doing this stuff too much. I mean flashing roms, rebooting backups, flashing kernels, making backups and all that stuff

No, you should be fine. I mean *technically* the more you do something like this, the more likely you are to break something, I guess, if you're not careful. But as long as you stick to this type of stuff that doesn't touch hboot, there's very little you can do to get a brick.

hahahah nice fellas

I read that renaming backups is ok as long as you dont add any spaces or qoutations etc...
for instance I would rename mine from BCDAS-20110111-45789 to
BCDAS-20110111-mikfroyo43 I've never had to actually do a restore, so I have no idea if this works lmao

I had never done it before so was a little nervous, but renamed it then booted into recovery then restore and there are a list of backups, easy as pie:) thanks to help from Akazabam

I can verify that is is possible to rename backups made in Amon Ra. Just go through a file manager (I use Astro) to /sdcard/Nandroid/(Your Serial number)/list of all backups made on the phone.

The backups are going to be folders with the folder name as the name of the backup. When you rename it, make sure there are no spaces, and do not move the file to another directory or Amon Ra won't be able to find it to restore.

As an example here is how I name my backups:
CM6.1.2+snapCFS
