Replacement for our "10"

Last edited:
The G6 is available unlocked in the UK already, I've just not been to a shop since it was released to see it.
Saw one today. Unfortunately the shop had left it unplugged and so I couldn't turn it on, and of course those security things make it hard to judge the handling, but it felt OK in my hand, slightly easier to wrap around than the 10 (same width but marginally thinner), and the frame made it feel very solid. I'd probably have put the volume buttons a little lower if I'd been designing it myself, but otherwise quite a nice-feeling phone.

The G6? It stood up to squeezing quite well ;)

We know that the U 11 will be able to toggle some settings or launch some apps in response to squeezes. We have no reason to believe that the "edge sense" functionality goes beyond this (i.e. forget those old concept videos which showed people sliding their fingers long the side of the phone instead of volume controls, etc. There's no evidence at all that any of that made the final cut, and we're essentially certain that it has physical volume buttons).

I think they are perfectly placed. My N6 had the volume buttons set lower and it was always an issue with the car cradle. If it wasn't placed exactly right, the side grips would always 'adjust' my volume for me. The G6 buttons provide plenty of clearance for both not being accidentally squeezed when placed in the car, and being able to adjust them while they are in the cradle.

You'd definitely not like a Sony, who tend to put them about 1/3 of the way up from the bottom. I've never understood why they think that's an ergonomic location for them.

I think it might be 360 audio recording, and the blogs are jumping to conclusions about video. The teaser doesn't actually say video anywhere.

That certainly makes more sense to me. The 360° video didn't make much sense but that's what they said so that's what I printed. I live & learn. ;)

Regarding the Edge Sense "training" Application leak

There had better be an easily provided way to disable the new Edge Sense feature. It would be helpful to have a global master switch for it, and it would also be nice to have a disable on a per application basis. For example, I may want to use it for Camera only and not have it take over the rest of the device causing frustration in other applications like Messages, Music, or the homescreens(launcher).

Here is a link for a video about the HTC U 11. It was posted on You Tube and quickly removed. It is the whole story on the new phone, unfortunately, not in English. Here is the link:

I entered my email for the live unveiling but all I got was an invite to live show in New York City. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Well it hasn't been enough to convince the mass market. :(

I expect there to be some hoopla about their "USonic" audio system tomorrow, but that's irrelevant to me (it relies on their earphones, and I wouldn't use those).

I said I'd wait and see the actual device, but really hard to get interested in a phablet...

Getting off topic but I've committed to the LG G6 with s ridiculously dumb watch.

I'll definitely post when I get them. I read an article that said you can buy it now, but after 2 weeks pre-order from B&H I still don't have a tracking number.

You know like it's coming my way

I'm with dontpanicbobby and agree with Hadron. I've tried to inform people of the 10's great sound, but very few people seem to care. Its always been my belief that the most important thing on a phone is the sound. The 10 is one of the few phones that I don't keep saying, "What did you say" on phone calls. But the majority buy phones to take great pictures and, silly me, I buy cameras for that. At least that's what the manufacturers have sold the public. HTC was on the right track. I did read a few articles, like Hadron mentioned, that claim HTC's earphones sense the correct audio for each person's ears. One, it sounds finicky to me and two, I'm keeping my 1More Triples.

Well the successor is now official, though HTC haven't posted specs on their own website at time of writing. And it's, well, what we thought it would be:

Edit: It seems that the product page is up, just not linked from the list of phones yet. Listed as in stock (??) on the US site for $649. In the UK it's pre-order for £649 with an estimated shipping date of 1 June - which curiously makes it $100 cheaper than the Ultra in the US but the same price as the Ultra in the UK.

(For those who don't know, UK prices always include sales taxes, US prices exclude them, so taking today's exchange rate that makes the tax-free price of the U11 7% cheaper in the US than in the UK and the Ultra 7% more expensive).

Here's the link to all the information on the U11:http://www.htc.com/us/smartphones/h..._cid=4f63db7c55&mc_eid=ac72f4cadd#!color=blue

It claims that the new earphones have a sonar-like system: "Our USonic earbuds map your inner ear with an advanced sonar-like technology and then adapt the sound profile to your unique biology." It sounds awful gimicky to me. (If not impossible) It also says it has its own DAC. The new 1More Triple has a DAC too. What happens with 2 DAC'S? Anyone have a comment?

The Lightning version of the 1More Triple has a DAC, but it has to because Lightning only supports digital output. The analogue version, by definition, won't contain a DAC..

It's the same story for USB-C audio. The phone only outputs digital audio, so whatever audio device you connect to the USB-C, either USB-C headphones or a USB-C to 3.5mm dongle, will contain a DAC. But there will only be 1 DAC in the chain because the headphones you connect to the dongle won't have one.

(You do get headphones that have a DAC and also accept 3.5mm input: any BT headphones that can also work wired have this. But they only use the DAC when using BT, and switch it off when using the analogue input).

Thanks for the explanation. It makes perfect sense. I keep thinking that USB C and lighting are the same. Even though I know they're different.

Unfortunately, it seems like its the latest trend. Manufacturers tend to follow Apple and HTC may be first Lamb in line.

So it's official. The LG G6 will be replacing my well used 10. Had a bit of a snafu with B&H Photos billing practices but it's straightened out now. My replacement for the HTC 10 should be here by Monday at the latest.

Good luck and let us know how they compare, especially the sound! ;)
