Root Replacement phone coming today

Newbie
I am receiving my replacement Tbolt today due to a bad speaker. I rooted months ago using adb. I am running stock gingerbread. So I need to unroot my old phone and have a question or 2. I went to the root/unroot files and read the info. It appears if I download the new gingerbread referenced in the link, it will put my old phone stock, with s-on. Is that the way it should be sent back to Verizon? Not sure because it mentions something about locked bootloader and stuff.

Now, my "new" phone, what would be the best way to root it now? I know I have lots of choices, not sure about revolutionary, since it looks a little more difficult to set back to stock from what I read.

Thanks for your help.

What is your hboot version? Depending on what it is unrooting will be different.

For rooting your new phone you just need to use revolutionary

The process to unroot and send it back with s-on is extremely simple. Why not do it? Pull out your sdcard after factory reset and you're done.

Just went through the exact same process due to a busted USB port.

I followed the unroot directions here. It wasn't too bad at all. When you get your new phone, make sure you do a nandroid backup before and then you can factory reset so they don't get any of your personal info.

When you reroot with Revolutionary, it will load its own recovery which on my phone wasn't compatible with my nandroid backups since I created them with CWM from the Rom Manager flash. So, after rooting, download Rom Manager, flash the CWM recovery and load your nandroid backup. You are back in business.

Two things, 1) in the unroot process: to do the Hboot maneuvers you need Fastboot. Youi have to put the fastboot.exe in your adb platform file (wherever you run adb from) for the fastboot.exe to run. Probably obvious to smart people, but i figured it out trial and error. 2) In the Root process: Revolutionary will only run on adb if you have uninstalled HTC Sync, for some reason that was tough for me, after that it worked perfectly.

You just need to flash the nohboot zip and then the hboot only zip from the unroot sticky and you should be done.

Here is a copy/paste from the sticky, follow these instructions and you will be unrooted.

Putting current stock firmware and s-on back onto the phone

after getting the bootloader back to the original s-off,engineering 1.04.2000 hboot download these 2 files:
1)PG05IMG_2.11.605.5_no_hboot.zip
md5: b7ebb0b208f704c84f1224de16e61a8e
2)PG05IMG_2.11.605.5_hboot_ONLY
md5: e6df3ae14523508868dc811ecc5d4b07

rename PG05IMG_2.11.605.5_no_hboot.zip to "PG05IMG",move to your sd card, and flash in hboot.

this is important! you must flash the PG05IMG_2.11.605.5_no_hboot.zip first

after successfully flashing that, you will be on unrooted gingerbread with an eng s-off bootloader. delete the PG05IMG file from your sd card. now place the PG05IMG_2.11.605.5_hboot_ONLY on your sd card. check the md5. once youve verified it matches, you can rename PG05IMG and flash it.

again, only flash the hboot file after you have successfully flashed the rom.

now you are 100% stock on latest firmware. unrooted gingerbread 2.11.605.5 with *locked* 1.05.0000 s-on bootloader.

as always,be as cautious as possible doing hboot flashes, and follow directions in the [HOW TO] and some root terminology to flash these files if youre unfamiliar with hboot flashing.

Y:

Is the reason he only flashes the two files (no fastboot) because he didn't have perm s-off?? I didn't see whether he was or not. I was a manual method but did the perm s-off so I had to undo that too before flashing the hboot fiels.

BTW, like the horsey better than Mr Rude! :P

I lost the link to the horse :( got to search on the uploads on my website before he comes back.

The OP has the old eng bootloader on his phone not the perm s-off or revolutionary s-off, the eng bootloader can be overwritten by RUU files without issues. All the fastboot BS is to get the revolutionary hboot replaced by the eng bootloader. That is why I asked for his version of hboot to begin with so I could identify what version he had and what the proper steps he needed to take were.

Mr Rude is much more fitting, though ;)

Hey I am never rude just ask some of the mods :p

just wanted to point out, that the tbolt file in the unroot directions has both adb and fastboot, and the original eng hboot contained within. after changing to that directory(open cmd window, type cd c:\tbolt) you shouldnt have to do anything else, just run the commands. tried to make it as painless as possible ;)

but you are correct, that if youre pusing files from somewhere else becasue you allready had the sdk installed, fastboot.exe will need to be in that same directory.

OK, just got my new phone setup. It is rooted via revolutionary. I came out of the box with froyo, and I just received a notification that the phone was going to dl gingerbread via Verizon. I know one of the stickies says to never let it dl and ota, and I didn't, I stopped it before it did. I think I have also seen a link, which I cant find now that says it ok to let it dl if you are rooted on revolutionary. So, what do I do from this point. I do want gingerbread, and was going to get the rooted stock one, or should I let the phone dl the one from Verizon. When I get brave enough, I am going to try some other roms, but I wasn't to get a clean one for my backup.
Thanks, and again thanks for all the help yesterday.

You should just flash the OTA rom instead of trying the OTA it is cleaner to do and less flashing things in hboot that can cause issues.

Thanks to everyone. I did try the flashing of the ROM, but ran into some problems, so I took the other route and followed the directions in the stickies and read and reread all the folks that had problems. After changing the recovery, then installing the ota, everything went fine. Went back and put in a new recovery and superuser. All went smooth, without loosing data, or settings. Thanks again for this great forum, and all the folks that make things easier for all of us.
