Report: Apple working on Verizon iPhone

I always had iPhone envy, but since getting my Eris, I am perfectly satisfied with my phone. If iPhone had come to Verizon last year, I probably would have one. Now I don't expect to change from Android.

for the record, the iphone will never catch up to this tech.
android is WAY to powerful at this point. i mean it was the only OS to come in and literally BEAT the iphone (nexus1, droid, eris...uh..HTC EVO).
the iphones days are numbered. particularly if they come out like the ipad. i mean what can they do to REALLY innovate? i really cant wait for it to be announced.

I always wanted an iPhone, but have loved my Droid Eris. If iPhone reinvented the wheel and came out with a smarter smart phone on Verizon, we'd all jump on that train. We're all tech geeks and guru's and we'll move to the hottest technology...right?!

Problem is, some of us are in a two year contract with Verizon with the assumption the Eris would be around for 5 years or so. Now it appears the Eris will be discontinued under verizon.

I don't care one way or the other if Apple and Verizon hook up. So far, every time I've been in the market for an item that Apple sells, I've found a comparable or better item, for less money. In addition to that, I'm a bit of a libertarian, and their closed platform business model pushes me away. I never quite managed to step on the hate MS bandwagon, but I've been anti-mac/apple for years, and haven't seen much to improve my opinion of them.

By discontinued, you mean they'll no longer sell them, correct? Or does that include pushing out updates? Either way, I'm not particularly worried. I like my phone very much, as is (2.1), and if id didn't get any more updates, I would likely be mildly disappointed, but not much, or for long.

They will continue to push updates but they will stop offering it for sale. Even the G1 still gets updates

Really?? Is Steve Jobs aware? I would think that the "lawsuit" against HTC and the fact that Verizon is still carrying an HTC device would drive apple away.

OR... That is why verizon is rumored to be discontinuing the Eris. Think about it, Apple sues HTC (not Google), talks to VZW about offering the iPhone. VZW agrees then drops HTC and launches the iPhone. IDK just speculation. Someone else mentioned it earlier I've heard this for over a year.

Which is what I assumed, and why I was a bit confused by the quoted opinion. It's not like you're going to buy another Eris from them to replace the one you already have.

Right. And also, the discontinuing of a device is really a gradual process, even if it is planned well ahead of time.

Also, the fact that devices are selling for less and less is not necessarily an indication that they are clearing their warehouses because of word from the manufacturers that it's being discontinued; even the iPhone went down in price a few times (although I doubt if we'll see two-for-the-price-of-one very soon).

The two year contract always tells me that I'll have the phone for at least that long, and that's a long time for one cell phone when you think about how things change so fast.

Seems far fetched when Verizon is still going to pick up the Nexus One, another HTC phone. And the HTC Incredible. Verizon should want as many phones as they can get. If they have both Android and the iPhone, then it doesn't matter who "wins" the platform wars. And people won't have that as a reason to go to another network. And it doesn't even require a conspiracy, it's just a good idea for their business

Absolutely agree; especially the, "Verizon should want as many phones as it can get."

That brings more people to the carrier, obviously.

No doubt!! All I want is some transparency. If their product is so good then tell people they have a fundamental difference with HTC and Google.

Tell us the Eris is a thing of the past. And that people who signed up for the Eris are just out of luck with the IPhone until your Eris contract runs out.

I have a 19 month contract with verizon assuming the Eris will be around for a few. Come to find out...I could have had an IPhone in September.

Are you sure about those claims? Last time I checked the Eris was offered in November or December. Now the Eris is is scheduled to be discontinued as of April 1st.

Makes perfect sense to me that Verizon doesn't look past their next profit and loss statement.

That's just ignorant. You honestly believe that the company that everyone tries to duplicate wouldn't sit back, see what the competition is doing, and try to do it better? That's how they got to where they are! Do you really think that they can't figure out how to do stuff everyone else does?

You really need to get past your Apple hatred and look at it objectively. When you compare the iPhone against, N1, Incredible, etc. these are new models just released, or very recently. Sure the iPhone pales in comparison. And when the new iPhone comes out, those will look like crap against it. It's the nature of the game.

Sure, Android is a great OS, but it's not for everyone. I can handle it, but if anyone else in my family had to deal with the issues we deal with, they'd have taken a hammer to it long ago. You have to understand that, what makes the iPhone so popular is that anyone can use it, and use it well, from my 9 year old, to my technically challenged wife.

Let's be perfectly honest here... What drove Android's figures is it's introduction to Verizon, and 91 million potential customers. If Steve and Co. had really done their job, they'd have released a CDMA iPhone the day before the Droid and Eris were launched. I guarantee these phones sales figures would be a fraction of what they are today.

I for one am ready for an iPhone. Screwing with the Eris (1.5, lag, battery performance, etc), and being jerked around by VZW (2.1 release) and Google (N1/CDMA release) has really jaded me. I'm waiting to see what June holds. The Eris is going back tomorrow, and, if the N1 is released on VZW this week, I'll pick one up to try it out. Unless it shoots magic pixie dust up my butt though, I really don't expect the experience to be much different from the Eris.

Am I sure that the Nexus One and HTC Incredible are coming to Verizon? According to Nexus One Phone - Web meets phone. it is. "The Nexus One Phone with Verizon Wireless service. Coming soon in the United States." And verizon has bought 150000 HTC Incredible phones. The relationship between HTC and Verizon seems to be going pretty strong. Even if the Eris gets discontinued

Howard Forums is reporting that new Eris devices are shipping with the 2.1 upgrade installed.

If true, I wonder why they would do that to a phone about to be discontinued today.
