Request: Keyboard Case

zachavm

Android Enthusiast
In the last several years, there has started to be a major lack of phones with hardware keyboards. The epic 4g was the last somewhat high end phone to have a hardware keyboard. Since then, it's nothing but crap. We just get blank buttonless slate after blank buttonless slate.

So, my only option is to start campaigning for sliding keyboard cases. I've made a suggestion to seidio, and I now I'm trying to drum up support here. I figure this is about to be the most common and popular android phone in the world and is the most likely to have a manufacture willing to take a chance on a new accessory.

So please post here and state your support.

Here's an example pic:

While I don't think I would ever use one myself, I wondered why more accessory manufacturers (if any) didn't do this already? Hopefully with the successful sales of the GS3 and the fact that the US carriers' versions look like the same dimensions and shell, I would like to see something like this come out :)

Not really having a clue as to what your really wanting, is it effectively a case that includes a hardware keyboard that "plugs in" to the phone?

Sorry for the ambiguity guys, I added a picture of a case made for the iPhone that is exactly what I'm hoping for.

Also, in the original post I forgot that Verizon does have the Droid 4 which is significantly newer than the Epic 4G.

I can see there might be a use for such an accessory for some people, but im struggling to understand why its needed for something like the s3.

Whats wrong with the touchscreen?

I agree 100% with the thread starter. thats why im still stuck with my original epic 4g. Yet my contract has been up and i am due for an upgrade.

Touch Screen is great...But my hands are sweaty or cold and clamy. and there are times when touch screen doesnt work for me in both instances.

-I work out a lot
-my hands are always dirty from eating or working on a car.

Touchscreen is just not practical for me 90% of the time because it wont work for me :(

Yes, I totally support your request for a Keyboard case for the Samsung Galaxy S3. I have been searching Amazon and E-bay hoping that one will show up.

I too, can't stand the on screen keyboards, and want a physical keyboard. I think the aftermarket option of a keyboard case is perfect, since the manufacturer only has to make one phone.

I'm on T-Mobile and currently have an HTC G2, my 2 years are up in a few weeks and I am evaluating my options. I've seen a few things come across in the last few weeks about some newer phones with physical keyboards, so I may hold out a month or so and wait for something to show up.

There is a decent market for these with iphones. And some good reviews of a couple on Amazon. They must work somewhat. However I think people are more willing to take a chance with making a product for Apple because there is only one iphone. When they look at the Android market its to saturated for them to choose one manufacturer, and one cell phone brand for there to be any legitimate profit.

I know it seems like the S3 is the holy grail of Android phones, but this phone is going to be dated before you know it. I just can't see there ever being an Android phone that is claimed to be "the one". To many companies and to many different phones.

I like the idea you give and it would give some people a nice accessory, but I have to go with my gut on this one and you won't see a decent one of these for the S3.

The ones on iphone use bluetooth, imagine battery life with it on?

Your best bet is to lobby HTC or Samsung to make more phones like the Droid 4. If your on VZW the droid 4 is the way to go for a keyboard.

It seems to have good specs and a keyboard. Not quite as good as the Galaxy S3, but, hopefully good. They said Aug 15th, but nothing yet...

Personally I get tired of people suggesting to go to this phone or that phone. Also tired of slider phones playing second fiddle to their slate counterparts. One reason why I stick with the Epic.

The only way I'd get a slider keyboard case is if it have 5 rows (ie. dedicated # row) and the 4 cursor keys for navigation. Otherwise it defeats the purpose of it in the first place. Do it right or don't do it. If they do it wrong, they blame the lack of interest on the non-sales. GS3 being the same design worldwide should easily be able to justify minimum order quantities for price effectiveness.

Not impressed one bit. No dedicated number row, and the overhang of the phone looks like it would make typing a bitch on that top row. For the sheer sized of the phone alone, a five row keyboard shouldn't even be in question, nor should the spacing of the phone to the top row. I'd also be suspect of any tilting mechanism not made by HTC. Definitely glad to see the effort there, but a poor effort is almost as bad as no effort. Do it right or don't do it all. That should also be directed at Motorola for the Photon Q too.

I do like this non tilting one better, but the casing for the phone just looks so bulky. The keyboard seems like it has more room, but it too lacks a number row. I ditched the alt key for numbers when I ditched my Palm Pre.

After two days with the S3 I'm almost ready to go back to my Epic. I truly hate typing on screen.

I am so surprised that no one mentioned using a stylus. Yes, its inconvenient, but it is an option and they do come in some pretty colors. The GS3 is a beautiful phone and by adding that Slider option (alibba) would make it clunky and then no case. Wireless key board would be nice.

No one mentions it because capacitive styluses are all crap. If it's not an active digitizer, it's crap for writing.

And no case? The keyboard slider is the case. The question is how bulky is it? For me I'd use it during the work day, and use a simple snap on case for casual use.

People really don't have much of a clue how productive some are with a real keyboard. I don't carry my laptop anymore, and I don't even use my tablet for document work. It's strictly a presentation and consumptive device.

Logitech, Boxwave, Seidio or Mophie really needs to jump on this. The keyboard side doesn't need to be too thick. It's just the keyboard, battery and BT module along with the sliding mechanism. There's no computing guts so to speak.

I don't buy a phone unless it has a physical keyboard. Every smartphone I have ever owned has had one. I just work so much better with it, and it is really even needed for one app I use most (remote desktop). However, as mentioned, it seems harder and harder to get a truly high-end phone with a physical keyboard. I really want the Samsung Galaxy Note II...so, I am trying to find something like this compatible with it...slider keyboard.
