Reset data service

BEFORE YOU START!

In CM7 (not sure about other ROMs) go to Settings->About Phone->Status:

You will need your molible phone number and your network number. The Network number is listed as MIN and looks like another phone number. Copy it down!!!

I sent an email to Virgin Mobile US about poor 3G speeds in an area that is saturated with Sprint 3G towers. Below is the response I reviced from Virgin Mobile. The only thing I changed was I took out my phone number and network number. I tried this procedure running CM7, but I could not get to the programming menu described below. I have a nandriod backup of the stock ROM. I made a new backup of my current ROM, Cleared the cache, formatted the system folder and cleared the Dalvik cache, then restored the stock ROM. From there I followed the instructions.

We are sorry to know that you have problems with your service. We truly apologize for the inconvenience.

We reviewed your account and verified that your data service did not experience any reduction on data speed. In order to make sure that your phone is working properly, please follow the steps below:

1. Turn on your phone.
2. Press the phone icon on the home screen.
3. Dial ##847446#.
4. You are now in the programming menu. Please tap on edit.
5. Tap the field next to "Enter MDN" a Virtual Keypad will appear on the screen.
6. On this space you need to enter: 111 111 1111.
7. Tap the field next to "Enter MSID" and enter: 111 111 1111 and tap ok.
8. Tap done.

The phone will turn off and then turn back on by itself. Then, try these steps all over again and on the MDN screen, please enter your cell phone number, XXXXXXXXXX and on the MSID screen, please enter your network number, XXXXXXXXXX and then hit ok.

Be advised you need to wait four hours in order to send text messages and set up your voice mail. You are able to make phone calls though.

If you need additional assistance, feel free to let us know how we can assist further or contact us at 1-888-322-1122 (or *86 from a Virgin Mobile handset). You can reach us Monday through Sunday from 4:00 AM ?

I have checked and sure enough, not matter which PRL you have on your phone (mine has 60686) this procedure resets your data service. I'm getting absolute 3G speeds at work and with 1 to 2 bars at home nearly 900Kbps down and 750Kbps up.

After I completed the procedure I once again, cleared the cache, formatted the system folder and cleared the Dalvik cache, then restored the backup I made of my CM7 ROM and data.

As a note, if all else fails you can call Virgin Mobile Tech Support and have them "reset your 3G service" as long as you have not been throttled.

I hope this helps!!!

I was really hoping this would work for me, but after completion still 243 down and 453 up. :(
Cal Virgin Mobile Tech Support and ask them to reset your 3G. I've had to do it a couple of times too. They just sent this procedure to me saying if it doesn't work to call them.

Unfortunately this procedure will probably only 'fix' 1% (my guess) of the issues with slow 3G speeds. This fix only resets problems with the tower and does NOT resolve network coverage and bottleneck issues. Most of the problem with slow 3G is due to network overload.

Assuming you have good signal (at least 3 bars)... do a test: check the data speed late at night. If it is much better than speeds during the day, then the answer is you are working off an overloaded tower. Plain and simple. There is no fix until Sprint upgrades and improves capacity.

What if you had been throttled in the past? it seems since i got throttled once and now large downloads take forever. They start off strong and its like they get put on the back burner slowing dramatically after 10 or 15 mgb

Any way the directions sound simple. And will give it a shot.

I used to work at Nextel as a developer... In any case, yes overloaded towers can cause the issue of slow network speeds - it's called contention. In my particular case it was not overloaded towers at all. When I did speed tests I did them early morning, afternoon and late at night. All the results were similar. When i called VM Tech Support the first time and after booting my phone my speeds increased pretty dramatically. That lasted for about 3 days at work and at home. After the 3rd day, back to what I had before. I called VM Tech Support again, went through the same process of having them reset my 3G service, a battery pull, hold the power button with the battery out for 15 seconds (to dump memory) then boot. Again 3 days later same problem. I suspected the radio in the phone. I switched back to the stock ROM, called them a 3rd time, they did the same thing same result. The RIL code in CM7 is solid....more than I can say for it in the stock ROM. The process above is the result of my continued "horrible wailing and gnashing of teeth" with VM Tech Support about the issue. I live in the Orlando Metro. Very heavy Sprint coverage here. I have friends with Sprint 3G and 4G phones, their data speeds make mine look pathetic. Could be a prioritization issue where Sprint favors Sprint phones over VM phones (sort of like QOS in TCP/IP). It may very well be that VM's data service in certain areas is going to be poor becasue of the number of Sprint customers vs. VM. Makes me think the same issue will exist with 4G on the HTC device.

I can get about 1mb a second with full bars in the Providence, RI area. But as soon as I hit that 2.5, I get .3ish a second. Will this restore my data speed to pre-throttled speeds?? (A side note) Recently VM cut me off because they thought i didnt send back a replacement. Anyways when i called and yelled and then they found the returned phone, they restored my service. I was at about 4gb's of data used for the month, and once again getting about 1mb a second.

thanks to everyone who makes this phone dump on all the big boys.....
