Root [RESOLVED] Rooted users DO NOT accept OTA update 2.13.401.3 or you will loose root!!

[RESOLVED] htcdev.com has now released an unlockable bootloader for 2.13.401.3. If you update, you will still lose unlock and thus root, but you can get them back by going through the process at htcdev.com again.

Do not accept OTA Update 2.13.401.3 as it will revert your HBOOT version to 1.08.0000 which cannot be unlocked! Your phone will be unrooted and returned to stock status.

If your device has upgraded to 2.13.401.3 already, you have two options (1) Obtain S-OFF with an XTC Clip; (2) Follow the procedure in post #2 below by nsa1001 to revert to software version 2.13.401.2 and click the thanks button for him.

Whatever the case, be sure to block future OTA updates from HTC By going to Settings > About phone > Software updates and deselecting Scheduled check.

If you are already getting notification that 2.13.401.3 is available, do the following procedure to stop the update and block future updates:

1. Download the update to your phone.
2. When the Install system software update box comes up, DON'T CLICK "OK" OR "DISCARD"! Instead, connect the phone to your computer via USB and chose disk drive mode.
3. Run Winrar and navigate to the /sdcard/Download folder of your phone and open OTA_Marvel_S_HTC_Europe_2.13.401.3-2.13.401.2_release_237041qqcw21hxt5vkhdz6.zip.
4. Find and extract firmware.zip anywhere on your hard drive.
5. Run Winrar and open the extracted firmware.zip.
6. Click "INFO" and find the SFX label.
7. Click "Remove the already existing module from the archive" and click "OK".
8. Delete all remaining files except android-info.txt and save firmware.zip.
9. Replace the original firmware.zip in the OTA update with the one you just destroyed.
10. Disconnect the phone from your computer.
11. Back at the Install system software update box, click OK. It will now fail (yellow exclamation mark in triangle).
12. Shut down the phone, remove and replace the battery.
13. Turn the phone back on. It will report that the update file is corrupt and ask if it should download again. Click NO!
14. Reboot the phone and promptly turn off automatic updates under Settings > About phone > Software updates by deselecting Scheduled check.

It's not the end of the world if you upgrade to 2.13.401.3 - there is a way back, without using XTC Clip. But it is a bit fiddly, involving a number of steps.

If you want: (a) 2.13.401.2; (b) unlocked bootloader and (c) root on your HTC Wildfire S, here is what to do.

You need to download a bunch of stuff:

(1) HTC Sync Drivers
(2) Android SDK, including developer-tools
(3) Goldcard creator
(4) The 2.13.401.2 software installer
(5) The unlock bootloader software installer
(6) The root.zip that will root your phone.

And here are the pages I used to produce a rooted phone *after* I mistakenly upgraded to 2.13.401.3.

First, downgrade the software using this guide:
[S-ON][TUTORIAL] Downgrade from a ROM Hboot 1.03 to a ROM Hboot 0.9 - xda-developers

That will mean downloading a gold card creator (instructions on guide just mentioned), and creating a gold card

Step 18 of the guide above tells you to run the RUU installer. You need the 2.13.401.2 installer. And you can find it here:
RUU_Marvel_S_HTC_Europe_2.13.401.2_Radio_47.23a.35.3035H_7.53.39.03M_release_225747_signed.exe - download now for free. File sharing. Software file sharing. Free file hosting. File upload. FileFactory.com

Voila - you have now done what everyone says can't be done: reversed the problematic upgrade that actually downgraded your bootloader to 1.08.0000. At the end of this stage you will still have that bootloader, but you will now be able to fix it with the second step.

The second step is to follow the instructions to unlock the bootloader here:
HTCdev - Unlock Bootloader

There will be a whole bunch of stuff to do there, including using the adb shell.

The third step is to root the device. Download root.zip from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=672519&d=1312136127

And follow the instructions here:
http://androidforums.com/wildfire-s-all-things-root/399076-guide-how-root-wildfire-s.html

Ignore the incorrect warnings about being S-On - you can still root.
I just went straight to step 2 and it worked for me.
You put the entire root.zip onto your sd card, and then 'recover' your phone to that zip file. It will root your phone.

And that, really really, is that. You now have an unlocked bootloader, and have rooted your phone, despite upgrading to 2.13.401.3

But remember to turn off automatic updates, or you'll have to go through all this again.

Good luck!

1. Have you tried updating your boot loader per the rooting guide? [Guide] How to root the Wildfire S A510e GSM with S-ON (finally!)

2. If so and it doesn't work, this procedure should work, but first confirm that you have a Marvel (A510e/b) and not a Marvelc. You proceed at you own risk. I hope that helps.

Hi nsa1001, thx for the tut!!

I have a question. In this tut [S-ON][TUTORIAL] Downgrade from a ROM Hboot 1.03 to a ROM Hboot 0.9 - xda-developers
I kind get stuck on step 15. It says:

"Open misc.img in the current directory, and change line 11 which contains the version number of your current ROM. Change it by number of the future ROM you want to install."

Line 11 is 11.33.401.2 but I don't know what to replace it with??

Also the RUU installer keeps telling me that it can't connect with my phone, connection error 170. Is it related to my first problem?

If you could help me out I would sincerely appreciate it.

I just figured some things out. At step 15 you should replace it with 1.30.401.0

And the 170 USB connection error is because I had HTCsync running when I executed the RUU. When I closed HTCsync and tried again it worked like a charm. Now off to part 2 and 3 :D

Thanks for the reminder about killing HTCSync before running the RUU. I forgot about that, and will put it in my root guide now.

Excellent topic. Thanks to nsa1001 and everything, but

There is one little problem, as I see it. I have managed to do everything from the first step with to no problem...I have downgraded 2.13.401.3 to 2.13.401.2 and even lower in order to unlock my bootloader...

But theres where the new trouble occurs. Despite the success to downgrade from the latest version I still can not get lower the HBOT - 1.08.000 version. Why is this important? Because as I can see this problem when you come to the step to get the "get_identifier_token" you get an error message in command prompt and eventually you may not unlock your phone.

So, here is the question:

Following the tutorials everything seems fine untill I come to this point (It is the last step in HTCdev bootloader unlocking) the command:

fastboot oem get_identifier_token

simply won't pass through command prompt and it keeps replying the error: "Command error"

Why is this happening? Is it because this version of HBOT is not unlockable or what? If I wasn't clear enough, please tell and Ill try to be more explicit.

Thanks.

@CafeKampuchia

No, I have not updated to dat boot loader, should I? And I have seen that HTC has released the bootloader for the newest version. Does that mean that now I should just update to the newest HTCdev bootloader version and then unlock the S-ON ( S-OFF) and then just apply the root.zip? Would that be possible?

When I boot into the bootloader I just see the version information, S-ON, radio version etc...

cheers

To root the phone you must obtain either S-OFF or unlock your bootloader; obtaining both is not necessary. (Notice my signature: "S-ON • HBOOT Unlocked • Rooted") To help decide which route is best for your phone, see this guide:

[Guide] Wildfire S - Which rooting procedure should I use?

From there you will go to one of two rooting guides depending upon the type of phone you have. One guide (for CDMA) helps you get S-OFF through a software solution. The other (for GSM) shows you how to root after obtaining bootloader unlock.

Hello.
I have firmware 2.13.401.2 with root and unlocked bootloader and i'm wondering if it's now safe to update to 2.13.401.3 ota ?
I tried do this update with RUU (RUU_Marvel_S_HTC_Europe_2.13.401.3_Radio_47.23c.35.3037_7.54.39.28M_release_236989_signed.exe) but i got error 155.
Which method is better ?

Thanks for reply.
I tried procedure 1 and procedure 2 bo none of them worked for me so far.
Maybe ruu executable is wrong ?
If You have this RUU working, could You upload it on free server ?
I tried to download from FileFactory Folder view - Marvel but it is impossible to download anything from this server.
I have this file from hotfile but i don't have checksum so i don't know if my file is ok.
And last question :-)
Do You think it is worth to update from .401.2 ?

Not necessarily. I had to resort to procedure 3 to get 2.13.401.2 on my phone. But I can't guarantee that it is compatible.

I never updated to .3 so I don't have it. I run custom ROMs now.

I can't answer that. I know that some do and some don't. But I've never seen a changelog for it.

I'm not much help today, am I :o

Hey there mate!

OK, searched this thread, saw no mention of the Marvelc CMDA stuff... I'm using a stock rom (US Cellular sense 2.1) and it's working great, so don't want to lose it or bugger it up! Yesterday I received a notification regarding the OTA System Update and have just stared at, no idea what to do with it. I don't like it, I despise it, I can't concentrate on life or anything, I'm fixed to slit my wrists as it is invading my very soul!

How can I kill it, can I kill it, or Should I install the wicked demonic code and treat it like a baby lamb?

Currently my software version is 1.01.573.00 and I'm having no issues, sense v 2.1 AD version 2.3.4 - Rooted and Superuser installed. Have TWRP recovery installed too....

Please, by the Grace of GOD, HELP ME!!!

lol....woow ok, don't kill yourself!!
Not sure I understood right...Did you install the OTA or not finally? OTA will unfortunately unroot your phone, so double check to see if you are still rooted if you have installed.
If you want to revert back, the only way I would know would be to restore the nandroid backup I really hope you made, or re-flash the stock rom.
I don't think there is any easy way of just killing it.

Hey Caro332,
Nope, didn't do the install.. I deleted it, but didn't want the update notices bothering me. This Stock Rom is the only Rom I found to work with my A6230 WF/s Marvelc so I am going to perfect it as best I can.

I posted a similar question on the ROM developers thread and he responded with a fix that actually appears to work... at least for my device.

You can find the fix to prevent the Update Notices using his link below and also learn a few things along the way... :)

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26340613&postcount=132

However, you are correct, updating WILL fail, and really, as it stands to date, particularly with the ROM I use there is no need to do so. If the update notices are a bother (As they were for me lol) take the time, approximately 30 minutes, to do the fix in the link... job done.

Thanks again mate,

Kev

P.S. Here is the working Rooted Stock Rom with Sense v2.1. that I have been working with on my Wildfire S A6230 Marvelc US Cellular Phone. :smokingsomb:
