Help Restore lost wallpaper

mr-matt

Newbie
Hi all. I stupidly erased my SD card with all my freaking pictures on it. But the image that's set as the homepage wallpaper image is still there, so Eris must copy it locally. I do NOT have my phone rooted and don't particularly want to. Is there a way to get that image out of my phone?

I'm pretty much a nubie with this. I found this link Any way to backup Home screen configuration ? - Android @ MoDaCo which talks about where the image might be, but i cant seem to access it via USB.

Help please!

Thanks,
Matt

You probably have to be rooted to get to the directory you want. Have you tried the phone file managers? Astro and eStrongs are good.

Thanks, bberryhill. I downloaded Astro (cool app!) but it no show me that directory. I did a global search for "wallpaper" and didnt find them (found others) either. :(

Ok, I unrooted and verified that you cannot access /data/data etc. unless you root. So, bad news/good news... bad news is that you need to root, but the good news is that if you do, and if you get estrongs or root explorer from the market, I verified that those files listed in that link (/data/data/com.htc.launcher/files/home_wallpaper_x) has, in fact, your wallpaper. You need to copy that file to your SD card (which Root Explorer can do), rename it to add a .jpg (or whatever type it was before) to the end of the filename, and you'll have that wallpaper file back at least.

It's not too hard to do, and doesn't erase anything that you have on your phone already. I can point you in the right direction if you're interested.

(Basically, you're going to install the 1-click Root for Eris app from the market, basically following the instructions here: http://androidforums.com/eris-all-t...is-app-apk-no-pcs-no-scripts-needed-easy.html. After running the app, clicking the button and rebooting the phone:

- shut down the phone again
- restart by holding VolUp and pressing power - this starts Amon_RA recovery
- go to the Backup/Restore menu
- choose Nand backup
- when done, press VolDn to go back to the main menu
- use the trackball to go to the Flash zip file... menu
- choose rootme.zip
- reboot the phone

You are now rooted. Install Root Explorer or eStrongs from the market, navigate to the /data/data/com.htc.launcher/files folder, and you will see the wallpaper files. You can copy those to your SD card and, as I said before, rename them with the proper extension (.jpg, .png. etc.)

If you really don't want to be rooted, you can restart in Recovery, go to the Backup/Restore menu, go to Nand restore, and choose the backup that you just made before, and you will go back to your phone as it was when you made the backup - i.e., unrooted.

Doogald, Thank you so much for all the time you spent in researching and writing! I really appreciate it. I'm going to look more into that link -- but first impressions seem great and easy -- and what rooting actually means.
