Root Restored stock image, can't install OTA update

I dabbled with CM6.1 for a while, but then decided I missed Sense (gasp).

So, I restored to my stock backup image, and all appears fine. However, the phone tried to get an OTA update, which fails when I try to install it. The update reboots my phone, starts to install, but then it gets stuck with a picture of android and an exclamation point. I can only reboot by removing the battery.

Do I need to flash the recovery manager or whatever? How do I do that?

You should never attempt accept an OTA while rooted. What is your root method? What is your current hboot version? Presumably, the update didn't get far, but you should check. While in hboot, verify that you have a custom recovery still (clockwork or RA).

While it is technically possible to accept an OTA update while you have root, it's a bad idea. Since unrevoked can root all hboot versions now, you can get out of trouble for the most part, but you will never be able to restore any previous nandroid backups. Switching hboot versions makes them useless. If you absolutely must do it that way, you have to flash a stock recovery image first, or unroot entirely.

A better way to do it is given in the Rooting for Dummies guide:

See section 6 under "After Rooting" about upgrading to the latest OTA. You need to flash a ROM based on whatever OTA you're updating to along with the radios. What OTA are you trying to update to? I ask because I have no way of knowing how far behind you are. The best idea is to flash a ROM based on 3.70 along with the latest radios. All can be found in the guide. You can also flash the Sprint Lovers ROM as a PC36IMG, which will flash the ROM and radios in one shot. The link is also in the guide.

thanks for the info. I'm in a foreign world with this rooting business, so I apologize for my noobishness.

I didn't even think about the fact that I can probably just follow the "unroot" instructions in the root for dummies thread since I have now restored to my stock backup image.

When I rooted, I followed the instructions in the root for dummies thread. I will check that out.

For my own reference:

HBoot-0.97.0000
Recovery - clockworkmod 2.5.0.1

It is trying to install system upgrade 3.70.651.1

I am downloading "PC36IMG.zip - HBoot 0.97 - S/W 3.29 or Below" right now.
 
Keep in mind that if you go that route, it will upgrade your hboot version, and all nandroid backups you've made previously will no longer work. Like I said before, it's better to manually update, and leave hboot alone. It's up to you, though. Just understand the implications of accepting an OTA update. Once a new OTA is released, keep in mind that if you do this again (unroot and accept it), you'll loose root until unrevoked releases a new update (or a more tedious manual method is released). Right now, unrevoked works with all hboot versions, so you can reroot.

I'm aware of what I'm doing (at least, I think). After playing with custom ROMs for a couple months I decided the benefits aren't worth the drawbacks, so I think I'll stick with stock for the forseeable future.

Mainly, its a business phone and I don't want to risk getting Sprint pissed at me for being rooted long term.

Also, there were a handful of minor bugs I found in cm6.1.

I also never got 4g or Sprint tv working.

I even missed sense. I think sense looks better, and I really missed the sense keyboard.

If you decide to go back to rooted, there are Roms out that look just like the stock rom. CM is an ASOP rom and does not use Sense but there are many others that do. Fresh and Mikfroyo are the two that I have stuck with and both work flawlessly.
