Root Restoring incredible 1

connortn

Newbie
I have the incredible 1 and have rooted it, android vs. 2.2, s-off. Don't remember or know how to tell which rom I'm using but it's not stock.

I would like to go back to the stock rom, keep s-off (I think), and rooted, and do it the simplist way.

What are the benefits of s-off if I'm going to use the stock rom? I have Superuser Permissions, Titianian Backup, ES File Explorer and Root Explorer if any of these are needed for the process.

Not real tech savy, I rooted w/s-off using a method on the forum here. That was almost a year ago and I don't remember which method I used (if that's important). Will choosing "factory data reset" do this and leave my dinc rooted, or not?

Suggestions?...

You would just install this for stock 2.3.4
[Rom] Official Inc Ota 4.08.605.2 [Updated:23Nov2011] - Droid Incredible Development - RootzWiki

However you will need to edit the build.prop file to stop the update nag, by following the directions here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=844702

Except you would change the correct line to this:
verizon_wwe/inc/inc:2.3.4/GRJ22/389630.15:user/release-keys

Instead of what is listed in that thread.

Thanks sdrawkcab23,

Looks a bit intimadating for an old geeser, but I'll give it a shot.

This is going to sound stupid, but when it says...1. Put the Rom on the root of your SD Card... I don't see where I can download the Rom to begin with.

Should have bought a hammer instead of a smart phone. ...at least I know what to do with a hammer :-) Once I get it back to the stock Rom, I'm going to quit fooling around with it and just use it!

It's in the "downloads" section of the first post:
Dev-Host - wildstang83_inc_4.08.605.2_11232011.zip - The Ultimate Free File Hosting / File Sharing Service

Oh! I saw that but had no ideal that was the name of the Rom. Would have been nice if it had said:

Download Rom here: wildstang83_inc_4.08.605.2_11232011

That would be for us old dudes that can't keep up with peoples intentions. You have to be very direct and simple for us :)

...so what is: Download the DTR HERE

...have no ideal what a DTR is or what to do with it even if I had one. I know this is simple to most guys/gals here, so is playing a musical instrument. ...if you know what you're doing :D

Thanks!

Ah! So that's what a DTR is. Would have never known:p

Being that I have data turned off on my phone, will a DTR speed up my download time using wifi? Reason I ask is I would assume that wifi would be concidered data also, but the DTR may work only with phone air-time data.

Thanks guys. You've been a great help. Will start on the Rom project tonight after work.

It would have no effect on wifi.... and in my opinion has no effect on 3g speeds either since data is throttled at the tower, not at the phone.

OK guys... I downloaded the Rom, finally figured out which disc drive was my Micro-SD card and put the Rom on my SD card, Powered down, powered up w/vol down into HBOOT, highlighted "Recovery" and pushed the power button and got into "ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.0.5". I scrolled down w/vol till "wipedata/factory reset" was highlighted, and pushed the menu button, the home button, the back arrow, the looking glass symbol, the camera button... they all do nothing except the power button which just turns the screen off!

So where am I? What do I do now? This was the first step in the "wipe" list using the above process and it seems my phone won't let me "wipe" anything.

I've pulled the battery several times and it brings up the 'Bootloader' screen. I've tried 'reboot' from there in hopes it would get me out of this loop, but no luck. 'Power down' does nothing but turns off the screen.

Choosing "Bootloader" will bring up the 'HBoot" screen again. My choices are "Fastboot" (which returns me to the previous screen), Recovery" (which puts me in the first part of this post), "Clear Storage" "Simlock" and "Factory Reset"... all of which I'm afraid to try. Can't get back to my phone from here so I'm stuck.

So how do I get out of this mess and get on with what I'm trying to do?

What to do... what to do...

EDIT: Well, the phone finally decided to reboot into normal operation out of the "ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.0.5" screen where I was trying to push a button and get the "wipedata/factory reset" to work. Have no ideal why. At least I'm not locked out... yet. Still don't understand why I can't get it to "wipedata/factory".

Tks...

Press the trackball :)

I did.... "...the camera button".

But... I may be having a problem with the trackball. I've been working in 70-80 hives of honeybees in the evenings and I look like someone sprayed me with a waterhose when I get through from the 90+ degree temperatures (you wear extra cloths doing such work :D) and my Dink was in my pocket at the times. So it got very wet and now it wants to scroll on it's own when I turn it on. It (the trackball) seems to work okay as a camera shutter button, but that's the only time I every have need for it. If it's supposed to work like swiping the screen, it doesn't! I've removed the back and the battery and put it under a fan to help dry it out. I'll try it again after it drys and report back.

Okay... Looks like I'm back in the game! I'm down to this in the list of things to do:

Mounts and Storage:
Format-
/boot - x2
/system - x2
/datadata - x2
/data - x2
/cache - x2

...but I don't see "Mounts and Storage" anywhere. I'm only seeing:

Reboot Recovery
Wipe Dalvik Cache
Wipe Battery Stats
Report Error
Key Test

How do I get to the "Mounts and Storage" window and start with the "Format" ?

Tks...

Okay! Nailed it! One last question (I hope)

It says above:

However you will need to edit the build.prop file to stop the update nag, by following the directions here:
How to disable Verizon's OTA updates - xda-developers

Except you would change the correct line to this:

verizon_wwe/inc/inc:2.3.4/GRJ22/389630.15:user/release-keys

Instead of what is listed in that thread.

...So I follow the link and it says:

...and look for a similar line that specifically includes the xxxxxx:/user. Edit that line to this:

...which I assume is where I would put: verizon_wwe/inc/inc:2.3.4/GRJ22/389630.15:user/release-keys

But the only line that has the word "user" in it that I see is:

ro.build.type=user

Is this the correct line to change to stop the update nag, or am I missing it? The phrase xxxxxx:/user is what's throwing me. I don't know what is implied as "xxxxxx" before the word "user".

Connor

Well, had to figure it out again. For those that have trouble disabling Verizons nagging OTA updates for the original Incredible, I'll try to add (in black) a little to the original posters wording...

(Using "Root Explorer) Navigate to /system and long press on build.prop, then select the "Open in text editor" option and look for a similar line (a line similar to the one shown below but with some of the numbers being different) that specifically includes the xxxxxx:/user. Edit that line to this:

This line (according to what sdrawkcab25 says above and that worked for me) would be:

verizon_wwe/inc/inc:2.3.4/GRJ22/389630.15:user/release-keys

I had a dog of a time trying to understand exactly what was being said as I'm not exactly savy with these processes. I hope this will help someone that has had trouble disabling the OTA updates.
