I have no idea what I'm supposed to say here so I'll just rave on a bit until I get tired or you all leave the room yawning loudly.
I'm brand new to the Android world, having most recently had an iPhone 3 and prior to that an imate jasjam (windows mobile), preceded by a variety of other phones such as Nokia.
I loved my iphone but was a bit frustrated by its lack of configurability. I see Android as the solution to that. My initial impression of Android (based on less than a week's experience) is that it gives me everything I liked in my iphone but enables me to customise more and also gives me more features. So far so good! I'm giving my iphone to my wife who wants a new phone - something simple as she is a technophobe.
I've recently become a retired gent of leisure at age 61 and enjoying every minute of it. I spent almost my entire working life in technically-related things - originally Chemistry and then IT for most of my working life - so I'm happy to embrace new technology when I feel a need for it. I've been using computers since 1968, when I learnt my first programming language, a variant of Algol, then progressed through Fortran, Cobol, various assemblers, VB and (to a small degree) Java. My IT skills are now somewhat obsolete but I'm considering retraining as a retirement project to update my programming capability. That's if I find time between classical music, trekking, gym, reading, travelling, French, Spanish, German and maybe even a return to golf and tennis.....
My initial explorations with Android have been good. My phone is an HTC Desire S. There are a few quirks in it that I hope to resolve through this forum - to find out if it's me or it's a genuine oddity/bug in the phone or Android. I also need to find out all about rooting my phone (sounds quite exciting although need to find out if it's legal) for backups to work. Interesting times ahead with my new toy.
