Revert from 4.2.2 to 4.1.1

I would really like to read some of your dislikes with the recent update. I noticed right away that some of the updates made my tablet resemble my Galaxy SIII phone, and personally, I like the update. I have yet to run into any problems. Perhaps if someone would post some problems it will help me understand what you all don't like...maybe I'm missing something. I'm un-rooted...all stock 4.2.2

Ii factory reset my tab 2 5113, it didnt went revert to 4.1 but the good news is after I did the factory resetting,it works perfect now, very fast and seems good so far, still 4.2.2 but works smoothly now after the factory reset.just do the back up and all apps will be installed again, although some of my pictures that I save in gallery lock apps are gone,I might save it to sd card before I factory reset.of course u have to remove the sd card to save all ur files.all in all, works good.thanks for all the info I got her in android forum♥♥♥

My galaxy tab 2 10.1 got the 4.2.2 update last week and my contacts list appears to have been corrupted. Is there a tool to clear the list and reload from Google servers?

Same problem -4.2.2 sucks.
No way to create a shotcut to browser items like ebay, weather, etc.
keyboard n.g. too.
No back arrow, no tab,, no button to collapse keyboard, etc.
Wish I could revert too.

I don't want my tablet to resemble a phone. The huge, full-screen notification bar wastes a monumental amount of space, and if I don't drag it all the way down, it springs back up. The "previous apps" thing also takes up the whole screen for no good reason. The removal of the button to hide the softkeys is pretty inexplicable to me, too.

Some other aesthetic changes I don't like either.

The update is unsuitable for tablets. It is aimed at phones.

The Menu, Home and Back "buttons" have been placed in the middle of the bottom edge. No way to reach them in Landscape orientation without re-positioning hand(s). Gross ergonomic fail. Can't believe this was ever tested in a tablet.

What we should have is skewed, user selected left or right placement so they can be reached by thumb.

I agree with Harlander regarding the notification. The previous version in the bottom corner was fine. The huge drop-down is awful.

Considering back-dating or sourcing thumb extensions.

See "Install Original Factory ROM on Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 5xxx" by Matthew Moore on YouTube. Sorry I can't post link as I am a newbie.

I have not attempted the backdate. Bit nervous but the more I use the updated tablet the less I like it.

You can also view a review by Matthew Moore titled "Samsung Galaxy Tab 4.2.2 Update (Pretty, But Awful)" on YouTube.

My problems with the 4.2.2 update.
I am left handed so hold the tablet with my right hand and swipe with my left. The dam widget box is on the left, I cant move it or get rid of it. A right PITA!
They have moved the apps and widget launcher from a page to the desktop, it sits in the center under the home page key. I manage to hit the launcher just about every time I go for the home key.
Having used the tab for a few days now it does seem to run out of power very quickly, today from a full charge to shut down in about 3 hours.

The sheer arrogance of Samsung is astounding, first they didn't bother to read my mail properly, and replied with do an update, the next reply was you cant change it.

I am now looking to revert to the previous O/S when I can work out which one, and how to do it.

Let me know m_bitterend how it went if you revert to 4.1. You should check out the references I gave in my previous post if you want to try backdating. I was unsure what version to select.

Another poor placement is the little up arrow on the bottom right corner. Press that and a selection of shortcuts appear. OK, but the arrow now becomes an edit button and the down arrow to close the shortcut window appears where home used to be. So if you accidently touch the up arrow you cannot toggle it off. You have to reach for the down arrow at the centre. Poor design again for a large tablet.

The next generation 10.1 is worse. I had a quick look at the Tab 3 and it has taken the home and back buttons off screen and onto the surrounding frame - centre bottom. Samsung appear to have decided bottom centre is ideal as it is fair to right and left handed users. Both will find it hard to use!

My next tablet will not be the Tab 3.

I have been trying to root the thing for over a week now. I cant seem to figure out how.
I have installed CWM twice but don't get a backup option. neither can I figure out how to flash Cyanogen to the tab2.
SDK is supposed to be the thing, apart from a string of java errors I cant get a terminal window to open to send commands from.

I am lost and cant find any help that will set me straight.

Root Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 (Wi-Fi) P5110 on Android 4.2.2 [GUIDE] - IBTimes UK

Here is a guide for the P5110. If you have the P5113, search for ibtimes guide for that, as you may loose the HDMI output

You will need the zip file for 4.1.XX as well. It can also be found on that website

Thank you, but that has made no difference whatsoever.

The flashing process returns the following

<ID:0/005> Added!!
<ID:0/005> Odin v.3 engine (ID:5)..
<ID:0/005> File analysis..
<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 1)
<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 0)

and does no more.

I have no idea whatsoever where I am going wrong.

Strangely the article says I will need SDK, but makes no mention of when, but as I said am am having issues with that also with a java runtime error.

I am desperate to dump 4.2.2 but don't know how.

OK. To all you out there who want to dump 4.2.2 I have at last managed it. Yippee!!!!

On the XDA developers forum there is a clear method to follow.
I think part of the problem is that if you allow the tab to re-boot after installing recovery it re-loads the stock O/S

Check out this link [GUIDE] Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 OR 7.0 Rooting/CWM/Restoring To Stock - xda-developers

It took me a couple of goes to figure it out. I reloaded the recovery twice, which was unnecessary, but that's a learning curve.

I replaced the stock Samsung/Google O/S 4.2.2 with cyanogen. S search for the correct download for my tablet put up a list. I went for the latest stable release because I am not a developer and are thus fearful of problems. However my son is a developer and recommended them as good; although he didn't help me!!!!
The installation took about an hour, with all the fiddling about. I now have to install the apps that I want and learn the system. It looks good and comes without any of the junk that was previously loaded. I like that; I have choice.
Time will tell if it is less power hungry, although I doubt I will notice any performance improvement, nor really a games player or video user on the tab.

Thanks to all those here for suggestions. They perhaps pointed the correct general direction.

Glad to see you dug yourself out of the hole. Did you ever try to follow the method in the Matthew Moore video I posted details of? It claimed be like an update rather than a root approach in that there was restoration of apps without having to restore a back up or manually reinstate them. It stressed the need to cancel automatic updates to prevent the latest version from muscling its way back in.
I prefer to not root my tablet. Virgin Media finally released their Android version of TVAnywhere and this is not runnable on rooted devices.

I did try Mathew Moore's approach. However the tablet reverted straight back to the original O/S.

I have since encountered another glitch which is that a rooted tab will NOT run any of the google apps from playstore.

Researching this I get the impression thaqt google do not want any third party control. It did cross my mind, given the recent uproar over google scanning everyone's email through a gmail account that they have an interest in monitoring everything that goes on for the purpose of advertising and delivering those annoying pop-ups.

Personally I try to distance myself whenever I can.

With regard to Virgin media, I wonder if the non-running problem is the same issue as other google approved apps not running on rooted devices.

I am about to install a workaround, so I will let you know.

I found 4.2.2 very heavy on Battery drain. The OS itself performed smoothly after the second factory reset.

Quickly got use to the middle row of buttons.

Keyboard kept on reverting back to the standard Sammy board instead of the Swiftkey. Only real gripe over and above the battery drain. 2 days instead of 4 to 5 on 4.1.2.

I reverted back to 4.1.2 using Mathew Moore's guide above. Thanks for the pointer

Sadly the links no longer work in Matthew's guide now, the ones from the XDA forum. Anyone have a link to stock official for uk 4.1.2? I'm scunnered with this awful 4.2.2 now!
