revolution performance

Lurker
Has anyone else had any trouble with performance on their revolution? mainly on the web. I'm not down with bing so I've installed dolphin hd browser, google search, and google voice search. I noticed it was really slow so I did a side by side test with my moto droid. At the same time, I used the google voice search button and when both phones reacted I stated my search. The moto droid popped up the google search results right away. The revolution said "working" for 30 seconds and then took almost a minute to load the search results page. I called verizon and they told me to install advanced task killer but it killed my droid last time. I "upgraded" to what i thought was the best phone in verizons lineup. It should be running circles around my droid. Not being shamed by it. My screen timed out twice waiting on this reply page to load. This is super frustrating .

I think there is either something wrong with your phone, or all the stock bloatware is slowing it down. I also came from a Moto Droid and it was starting to show it's age and frustrate me; the Revo definitely runs circles around it. It seems to respond to most things almost instantly. Of course the first thing I did when I got it was freeze all the bloatware and replace it with LauncherPro, Dialer One, Handcent, DolphinHD, Google search, etc.

I've had no problems with the web, other than bit.ly links never opening on Verizon network... need to turn off data w dataswitch and and use WiFi only... read somewhere other ppl having Google related issues ill see if I cn dig it up n see if they got it to work.

Edit: spotty data service thread... towards the end... not sure if its ur problem but could be...

I have to agree with njKeever that all the stock bloatware is taking up precious resources. I've installed several 3rd party apps to deal with all the basics (GO Launcher EX, Keyboard, Contacts and SMS Pro as well as a different weather app). When looking at all the processes running, there are a ton that are native to the pre-installed apps and you can't cancel them. (They restart automatically.)

I installed JuiceDefender Plus, which seems to work great on the Revolution and really helped. I didn't want to root my phone just yet, but likely will eventually.) JuiceDefender cuts off the radios to the internet apps that aren't active, and the Plus version allows you to set specfics for each app. For example, I disabled (the radio access) to all the apps that start up natively that I don't use (ie: Twitter for LG, the native weather app, music app, Blockbuster, and the native browser I don't use, among others.) I'm still adjusting the settings on others, but just doing the obvious ones resulted in available ram changing (as reported in the app drawer of GO Launcher) from 105mb to 150mb. The phone is substantially snappier and I get several more hours of use out of the battery.

I think the real solution will be to root and freeze or uninstall all the bloatware, but I'm going to wait a while and see what development occurs. - MarkC

UPDATE:

It is not my network. I logged on to my home wifi and no changes. I logged my netbook onto the mobile hotspot, and it worked fine. It's gotta be the phone. Anyone have any ideas?

I've added a video to my first post.

Yes, I agree with rich 1340. I too had a Droid 2 which ran smoother, faster and did not freeze. I dislike watching that little wheel keep on turning. I have had it rooted also. But have not removed the bloatware. That is next. I guess I can't return a rooted phone??

I just ran that test on my phone (revo) and while not as fast as the droid, mine was about 100x faster than your revo.

Rooted with CWM and most of the bloatware frozen.

There does seem to be a stock app or something else that screws the device up and also locks the device into 1ghz and does not throttle down. Only a reboot fixes it. I have been messing with the Rev more and noticed this on demo units. The Rev can also run very warm at 120 degrees, which beats the DX2 in that regard. The only thing masking the temps is the plastic and would be hot if metal like the DX2. The Rev then slows way down and the operational ram gets in DX2 level low (70mb or less). Anybody else see this? I think the cpu locking at 1ghz MAY be why some folks see bad battery life.

Real or not issue for the Rev, it seems every other newer device has something funky ATM:

1. TB (random reboots, battery hog, poor 3G/4G management)
2. DX2 (random reboots, low operational ram, audio pops)
3. Droid Charge (slows file system and weakish radios)

Still, as long as people are happy, no harm no foul.

Added: I see what some folks mean about the Rev that touch can been too sensitive, since VERY easy to touch close to the nav buttons at the bottom and exit out of games or other apps by accident. Another reason I prefer hard buttons (though rare on devices).

That's probably problem specific to demo unit. If anything, rooting will solve bloatware related issues.

How do you freeze apps? Do you need to root, and if so, what's the best link to doing that? Thanks!

1. Root
2. Install Titnanium backup
3. Go into Titanium and touch the middle tab on the top
4. Touch the app and options will come up that inlude freeze (and "thaw" to unfreeze).

Thanks for the tip. I ended up using S1C to root. Then got JuiceDefender - awesome! Then renamed all the bloatware .apk's using Root Explorer. Seeing much., much, better battery life, and not nearly as much laginess as I was having when entering text. Still have some connectivity issues, but the juries out on that, right now.
