The DMCA(Digital Millennium Copyright Act) was update to include sim unlocking and that went into affect in January that makes sim unlocking without carrier approval punishable with a $2,500 fine per devices with jail time for repeat offenders. However there is legislation currently moving through congress to remove this provision and re-legalize it in certain situations instead of an outright ban.
