Hi folks. I'm looking for the latest and greatest way to root my stock gingerbread captivate then install the most recommended ICS build. Help? Thanks.

Look in the root section. There are a couple of threads there for rooting GB. There are a few different ICS ROMs for Captivate.

Team ICSSGS
[DEV][RC3] Team ICSSGS [Android 4.0.3] - xda-developers

MIUI4 Android ICS
[ROM][PORT] [4.0.3] MIUI4 ICS v0.5.1 - xda-developers

teamhacksung's ICS (to be CM9)
[ROM][ICS][IML74K] teamhacksung's ICS Port for Captivate (BUILD 14) - xda-developers

You can find more info in this thread:

I'm running teamhacksung's ICS Build 13 myself. I've been very happy with it so far. It's very responsive, and I haven't had any stability issues, or run into any bugs. ICS is definitely a step up from GB.

Thank you for the reply. I"ve been trying superoneclick method for like a day and it just freezes. Not sure what the deal is. Thanks for something though.

Awesome. I got it rooted but I have no clue what is going on as far as installing the clockwork mod recovery app. I downloaded rom manager but I don't know what to do now as far as getting clockwork mod installed. Can you help? I know this is kind of pestering you further but I'm stoked about getting ICS on this captivate and have been trying to do so for about 2 days now. Thanks in advance. Truly appreciated.

Clockwork mod from the market is behind for the captivate. Your best bet is to go to this link :

And flash that kernal with Odin. It has CWM infused and a lot of other goodies!

You just need to open the ROM Manager app, click "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" and select the phone model. It looks like the kernel Geeve linked has CWM 5. You're probably better off with that since the official Captivate version is still only 2.5.1.2, although you're probably going to loose the goodies as soon as you flash ICS.

If you haven't done it already, I highly recommend using Titanium Backup to save your apps and data before flashing.

Go to the teamhacksung's ICS thread and download whatever version google apps is at the top of the page. You you need flash that zip in recovery to install the google apps since they aren't included in the ROM.
