Ringback tones

I'm interested if there is a way to do my own ringback tones w/o subscribing to a service. I've rooted my LG Esteem on mere pcs w/stock rom. It's not so important to me to justify paying $10 bucks a month or more so someone I don't know to enjoy calling me. But I would like to let some know what I'm thinking about while I decide if I want to talk or not.

Theres a load of apps that let you edit an mp3 into a ringtone. Off top of my head Ringdroid
Dont ever pay for crap like that

I don't think it's possible for a phone to determine it's own ringback tone. It's a service because it's a network thing. When you call, the network determines the status and ID of the number you are calling, and sends you back a tone based on those info (hence the service), giving the caller a tone and deciding which tone, before even the caller's signal reaches your device.
