Ringer Volume Lock? Other volume question

This was my key problem and Bedside is how I got it to work for my purposes. The dev was great working with me via email to get things set up.

So, in Bedside, when it's enabled, it turns off sounds for all phone calls and emails and sends sound notification if there is an SMS message from anyone.

I tried SMS popup, Profiles, both good apps.
Will look into it. Yeah, these other apps are great for their purpose but I need for sms and email to be separated. Them being bulked stinks!!

Using something like SMS Popup, Missed Call, etc allow for some customization. The volume however is not independent.
So in laymen's terms, "notifications" is email and sms and there's no way to separate them? Bottom line: tough luck for me! :(

You're correct they're both deemed "notifications" as far as sound goes -- so they share the same volume level. But because of how Android works there are apps out there that when an SMS comes in, will raise the volume quickly and then set it back down. Email however is independent, and there's no way of intercepting it from the Gmail app at the moment. So you're out of luck, but can perhaps work around it (as a hack).

Bedside allows for different volumes by changing the volume when a call or text comes in (since Android allows us to figure out that those events are happening) and then setting it back down to what it was before the notification came in. Because it's changing the volume levels, it'll fire off Volume Locker to pop up a notification. So there's a setting which disables Volume Locker while Bedside is running, if you choose to use that app.

EDIT: Clarification ;)

I would love to test out the beta for you. I will pm you my email address. Thanks for looking into this.

Just posted an update to the market -- this should be fixed. Volume Locker is disabled while the camera is in use (as an option).

Ahh, forgot to post what's on my todo list:

  1. On/Off Widget, Silent/Vibrate Widget
  2. Disable volume locker when Silent Mode is toggled (from both the locked screen and the power menu)

Also with this release, other than the 2 new features above -- is an improved response time on the popup dialog. For whatever reason I left some code commented out, which should've made it into the last release. Anyway, let me know if you guys spot anything buggy or have any other suggestions.

...Feel free to give it a try and provide feedback :)

Very impressed with 'volume locker' as it's doing everything I wanted except for my 'toggle silent widget' being overriden now.

I see you are saying about adding some widget for ring/vibrate/silent. Am I missing something already there or is it still work in progress?

Should probably add that I'm a Desire user :)

Thanks Nathan!

I'm working on adding in a widget. I've been hung up with my bathroom renovation (it's amazing how many small things you need to do when installing tile) so haven't had as much time to dedicate to writing code, but hopefully this weekend I'll make some head way. :)

Hi Scythe,

I'm a new android user and I love this volume lock app. But sometimes I would find the volume being changed when i know i did not turn off the app. I added it to the ignore list to advanced task killer already. I'm using samsung galaxy 3 android 2.1
Do you have feedbacks about this?

Thank you

Hi electronica,

Thanks for the compliments :) -- I've received 4 reports of the app stopping, and so far the common theme is everyone who's had issues is running Advanced Task Killer. I believe there's a bug in ATK in which it's either killing off Volume Locker's service (VLService), or it's killing off a system service behind the scenes that Volume Locker depends on.

It's hard to really say. If the app crashes for you without notice, use an app like "Log Collector" and send me a dump of your log. My email is: hourdb [aht] gmail [doht] com -- then I can figure out what exactly went wrong

The latest version should give you full support for profiles apps: Setting Profiles (built in), Locale and Tasker (download "Locale Audio Update Notifier"), and a few others. I had a bug which a user helped me debug which was having the popup occur after the event changed the volume. Basically VL was too fast for the profile app.

Anyway, let me know if you find any issues. I'll work on some widgets as a downloadable app to compliment. :)

I've just put a free app on the market just for this situation. It's called "Volume Locker" and it's a very lightweight app. It will lock any stream you want, and allows you to quickly override the locked setting by clicking a notification when the volume is changed. If you don't click the notification within 30 seconds, your volume settings will be reverted back to the last locked in value. Feel free to give it a try and provide feedback :)

I downloaded Volume Locker. But I am still able to adjust volume on the side of my phone. This is what I want to disable. Sometimes I turn the volume off completely without knowing when I am holding the phone talking or playing a game. WHat am I doing wrong?

My problem is that I keep my ringer at a constant volume so I want the volume to adjust ringer deactivated entirely. I use something that disables the lockscreen so that I press the power to lock/unlock but the problem is the volume rocker also unlocks it. So I'm frustrated by a button that serves no purpose to me yet is an annoyance. I installed vomue locker because of the name but it doesn't seem to actually lock anything unless I'm missing an option/setting. I actually need something that LOCKS my volume rocker when on the home screen so it doesn't try to adjust anything.

Set the timeout to "Instant" and it will keep it locked with no prompts.

I have been playing with Volume Locker on my new Nexus S, and I like how configurable it is and how it serves a proper notification instead of a pop-up.

Now that the undesirable persistent effects of accidentally pressing the volume rocker have been suppressed, I am wondering if it might be possible also to suppress the beeping that the volume control itself makes? When I find myself in a situation (meeting or whatever) where I want my phone to be quiet, I do not want it to make noise to enter quiet mode, just as I don't want it to chirp and burp just from being handled if my finger strays up along the edge too far. Maybe there is another setting or app that disables the audible feedback of the volume rocker? Or maybe this would be helpful functionality to add to Volume Locker?

Thanks!

Sadly there's no way to prevent it from beeping fully. If I can figure out a way around it or Google adds the ability to via the SDK, then I'll definitely add it as an option. :D

Looks like a bug on my end, the fix was just pushed to the market :)

Ok, installed the update and now when I turn off the screen and push the volume button it doesn't adjust the ringer volume but it still activates the screen which means the 2nd press of the key adjusts the volume. What I need is for the screen to not even come on when enabled and a volume key is pressed.

Sadly that's a firmware/rom setting which the SDK doesn't let you control. Once they add support for figuring out where the audio change came from (app/rocker/etc) then there is a workaround. Until then there's nothing I can do :/

Nuts to that. Well thanks for the speedy responses.

I have a Droid X and hate the way that the Ringer Volume cab be changed so easily and unintentionally. I have tried several Apps from Google play that supposedly lock the volume. They tend to:
- Not work at all
- Act as a dialog box, asking to you really want to do this.

I what an app that will totally disable changing the ringer volume except from within that app. ie No beeps etc. when accidentally touching the volume control.

Anyone know of such an app?

/Dave
