Help Ringtone setting

Hi

I did do a search. Anyway I am trying to set ringtones for specific callers. having mild luck but it is a pain. I tried several ways.

Settings -> MyDevice -> sound -> Ringtones -> Handcent -> Music
This works but sets only for global phone and it is just a list of all the music (1000 songs) alphabetically and you have to scroll (no search). Even if it had specific contact ones you would have to scroll through an alphabetical list. If I want to set Imnul Romania I have to scroll through several hundred songs.

music -> set as -> caller ring tone
this will work but is weird. Say I have one person (call him Benjamin Franklin) I want to set the ringtone for. When I go to phone and just input the first few letters it finds one and only one contact, Benjamin Franklin, and I can call. But when I do the music -> set as it goes to the contacts list and the same person is sometimes listed 6 or 7 times, a few with a g next to it, a few with a y next to it, etc. I have to set one and hope it is the right one and then repeat the above process 6 or 7 times.

If I go to the phone and dial enough to select the person and then do a settings I can change the ringtone but it is for the entire phone. I proved this to myself by selecting a person I have a ringtone for, going into settings and looking at ringtone and it was the default phone ringtone.

Rocket player sets only phone ringtone

Going to contacts and miraculously finding the right one does the same thing. You have to scroll through an alphabetical list. No search.

So what is a good way? I would like to find the person easily, search for the song, and if possible for one song as a ringtone select several callers at the same time.

As an aside, why do contacts list so many of the same? For instance, my college roommate Doug is listed as the same name in contacts about 7 times.

Not sure why yours isn't working. The default ringtone for my phone is Carry On My Wayward Son by Kansas, but the ringtone for my X-Husband is Serenade by Steve Miller. I set it within the menu of his contact info.

Setting it through the Contacts app is the correct method. If you have so many contacts that it is a pain, try installing ExDialer. It includes a replacement Contacts app that you can optionally set to use, and it has quick-seach capability. As for why you see multiple listings per contact, there are potentially two settings that control that.
  1. Contacts > Settings "Only contacts with phones"
  2. Contacts > Contacts to display; select Customized list, and only include what you want to appear
You may also have sync enabled in Settings > Accounts for accounts that you do not want associated members appearing in your address book, and/or you may have accounts linked ("chain link" icon in Contacts app). It takes a while to sort through, but once you have it configured, you'll seldom if ever have to revisit these settings.

OK I guess the "only contacts with phone numbers" or selecting only from my droid gmail account works for the display. But when I go to search, no matter what settings I have, it searches all contacts. Is there a way to search (other than scrolling) just displayed contacts?
