If you press on the file, it should download it and save it for you. Get Astro File Mgr. Works well for me. :)

As a newbie and doing a search ended up here and downloaded
the astro file manager now my milestone is like my computer.

If you're talking about the fact there doesn't seem to be a way to save attachments in the default gmail app, check out an app called 'save my attach'. You tell it to 'open' the attachment with that app and it will let you save it to your sdcard.

Then you can do whatever you want with Astro.
