Root Risk of Custom Roms?

Alright, I realize that this has been asked before, and that I'm new here, but I wanna ask about something in a specific way...

Assuming, when trying to follow a guide on flashing a custom rom onto my Triumph, that I do everything perfectly and correctly follow a guide, is there any risk of bricking?

Also, what guide is recommended? I saw several on the sticky.

I'm rooted, so I've done that much.

Well you can make a backup, so there's pretty much no risk. If you screw up, just restore it.

The top guide is a tutorial on how to install CWM and flash a ROM, the second is a list of ROMs and similar things.
 
These phones are impossible to brick as long as you follow the steps for the phone itself. As long as you're not throwing dd commands at your phone's internal storage, you should be good to go. And if you don't know what that is... you're good to go.

If the recovery gets fudged when replacing it, then you still got download mode. If the ROM gets fudged when installing it, then you still got recovery mode. Only potential problem I've seen is if you fudge the things up in download mode and ROM both, then let your phone battery die. But that can be solved by charging the battery with an external charger or on another Triumph.
 
Just wanted to add a tip in addition to what the others have said:

Don't flash a ROM that is not meant for the Triumph. Others have done this, and it usually does not end well. You can typically recover from doing so, but stick to the ROMs that are posted here in this forum and you should be fine.

Also, the guide at the top of the forum for installing CWM on your Triumph is really good. Just follow the instructions carefully and never forget to make a backup. Have fun :)
 
Well damn you guys reply fast Haha. Thanks for the very informative responses (all of you), and I guess this means it's time for me to flash a custom rom onto here :D Any suggestions for which one i should use?

If you don't mind not having a working camera, then go with CM9 Reloaded. If you need the camera, then CM7 Reloaded.

The devs are working on it. And in my opinion, the features and look of CM9 outweigh the camera bug by far. The only other advantage of CM7 is it's slightly smoother.

yep basically in all those post, they were telling you. "It's all clear for take off, proceed to the runway..." :D

this phone is indestructible to pretty much anyone... unless you mess it up in linux. (scramble system partitions)
 
Just follow instructions and ask questions when you have them. Making assumptions can lead to a headache later on. :D
 
Well I just installed CWM and at first boot I received:

E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/command
E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/log
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/log
E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/last_log/
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/last_log/

But since it still looked usable, I went on. I went to Backup and restore, backup, and proceeded to back up my phone. Once the bar finished it emptied again and started going up a little slower this time, after a few seconds it all accumulated to say something like what I have below, and the error at the bottom, and brought me to the main screen:

Backing up boot image...
Backing up system...
Backing up data...
Error while making a backup image of /data!

EDIT: And now I'm being told my SD card is full, which I guess could be the reason for the crash in the first place. What are the backup files so I can delete them, free up some space, and then try again?

EDIT2: I believe I found it at clockworkmod/backup/2012-03-13.01.24.29

The first set of errors is common. Don't need to worry about those.

The second one would be the SD card being full, or not having one in.

EDIT: Apparently you ninja'd me with some edits. But yeah the backups are in clockworkmod/backup/. Make sure you have 1gig+ on the SD card, I would personally want a couple gigs free, the nandroids can get be large.

Backup files are in clockworkmod>backup> and then there should be in folders with date and time each folder in there is it's own backup...

And agent ninja'ed me...

what recovery version did you install?

and yes you found the backup file. you can delete it. how much space is free on your sdcard?
 
I only had around 6~700 MB free, and it looks like it takes up a lot more :/ I deleted my music because I have a ton of SD cards (I 'hack' everything I own lol, have some left over from my DS flash carts) and I can always move it over to another stick. I installed the version from this tutorial

After I backup can I move the backup from the SD card onto my computer?

The CWM you are using is fine.

The version next to the ROM in that sticky is the version of android that the ROM is based off of. So what you will have once you flash the ROM.
 
Cool. Also, extremely sorry for asking so much questions, totally in the dark about this subject. Only FW modding/replacing/flashing I've done is with PSPs. I do have one more thing though, can I move the backup to another memory stick, or even keep it on my computer until (If) I need it?

Yes, but it is always a good idea to have one on your sd card just in case. I have all mine backed up on my computer as well as on my sd card.

Ask all the questions that you need. Better to do that than to get yourself into trouble and be frantically asking for help to fix it. We will give advice either way, it's just better for you to ask first. ;)
