Help roam data overages

glshub

Newbie
I am with bluegrass cellular. On roam I only have 50 megs of free data on roam. How do I set the phone so I am sure I wont be using roam data. I can use a wifi without running it up or so they told me. So like maybe I can roll into mcdonalds and ck my emails right? I just want to be SURE I have it set right.

Also does Gps use fall into the roam data category? Will I need to turn it off also?

Thanks in advance!

Setting > Battery & data manager > Data delivery > uncheck Data roaming

GPS uses your 3G unless on WiFi, so yes you'll need to turn that off too if your roaming.

So if your roaming, just use WiFi and you will be fine.

GPS does not use data at all.

Google Maps and Google Navigation use data. Those are programs, though, that use GPS. It's not GPS.

GPS/cell triangulation/wifi triangulation do not use data. It just looks for nearby connections. If you have an offline maps application, you can still use it without data.

That is what I meant, therefore it will use data unless he has an offline map app.

Thanks for clarifying!

Look into Y5 Battery Manager. Turns wifi on and off at your memorized wifi locations. Mapdroid for offline mapping.

Thanks!
What is the background data setting for?
Sorry..... Im such a newb.

GMail and other email accounts use background data to sync and download new emails.
Other apps also use background data:
Android Market check for updates on apps in the background
News & Weather updates it's info in the background throughout the day
Backup Assistant to backup data every day
Lookout Mobile Security to send data for your "Weekly Security Update"
and the list goes on and on...

It's best just to turn off 3G when roaming, especially international roaming (Canada, etc)
Settings / Battery and Data Management / Data Delivery / Data enabled unchecked

Unchecking Data roaming above Data enabled may be sufficient enough. But with such low roaming data caps and such high overage fees, it's better safe than sorry.

Note: SMS text messages do not use data. SMS travels on the cell phones control channel which is part of the "voice" network, not data. The next question, which I'm not sure of the answer, is how does this affect voice roaming charges?

I have 600 mins talk on roam and unlimited txt (sms)onroam so need to be able to send and recieve these. It's complicated to me. Email updates would probably not hurt but some other updates might put me over. I just downloaded mapdroid. It is offline but not completely up to date. I used to have unlimited roam data. I couldn't take advantage of reduced phone prices due to contracts if I kept it and the monthly price for our 3 phones was going to be substantially higher if I kepy it. Looking back I would have kept it though. Id a shame I have all these features and can only use them near home where I don' t need them. Such is the price I pay to live in such a rural area. Bluegrass dorsn't let others use their towers, therefore others don't let Bluegrass people use theirs. ATT has a tower right across the lake almost done. Hopefully next time I can change providers. Right now, in my area, if you don't have Bluegrass you have no service is most areas.
