Root ROM Backup?

At the moment I probably not to interested in flashing different ROMs to my phone but I was wondering is it a Good a idea to at least backup the installed ROM? I am Rooted and if you guys feel a backup not a bad Idea is ROM Manager the best app for this?

Thanks

Rom manager is the only app for this, go ahead and back it up, but rom manager won't back up the kernel and modem.

u dont need to back up kernal and modem...Use Rom manager to back up rom if u like too...if u r not flashing custom rom, u dont need to back up at all....

Thanks for reply. I am really getting temped to Flash a new ROM. My phone doing fine but I love to "tinker" with things...:D

do it of u r tempted too...i was in same boat as u...researching abbout stuff and was so tempted

but i read a lot and first made sure that i know what to do if i soft brick my phone or somethong goes wrong. Now i am on my 4th rom...softbricked 5-6 times...learned a lot in those bricks :P

Considering how many things mess with the kernel kernel modem (such as voodoo), why wouldn't it be important to back them up?

Some of the big gotchas of playing with ROMs:

  • ROM manager backups aren't full, complete backups
  • "1-Click Odin" restores to "stock" aren't actually perfect restores to stock
  • People can and do "hard brick" their phones..

What people are euphemistically referring to as "soft bricking" their phones isn't really "bricking" at all, by definition. If you can recover it, it wasn't "bricked". Unfortunately people often only discover these facts the hard way.

Im new here and i could use some advice. Hopefully im in the right place.

I have followed the One-Click root for the Captivate. Step by step word for word cause im paranoid about bricking my phone. Everything seemed to work fine. I followed the tips on unlockr on what you should do when you root including downloading ROM Manager v2.5.1.2. I'm trying to create a backup and it tells me I have to have ClockworkMod Recovery installed before continuing. However when i scroll up and click "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" a quick loading bar appears then dissappears just under the notifications bar then when i click anything else i get the same message. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

WARNING: flashing new ROMs is VERY addictive ;).
i was very hesitant before flashing one for the first time but just make sure to follow directions carefully and you'll be fine.

The XDA posters are very helpful - don't be afraid to ask questions.
