Root ROM Backups

So I am getting into trying diffrent ROMS, when I go from one to another with ROM Manager it asks if you want to backup the existing one first. SO am I correct in assuming that I can load a ROM customize it, then back it up, load a diffrent one, then go back to the first backup?

How would I accomplish this?
