Root Rom Development

I'm a frequent Rom changer and wanted to learn how to develop my own. I found a writeup on XDA for doing so in Windows but read somewhere it was easier to do so in a Linux environment. I have Ubuntu on my other computer. Any suggestions on where to find a writeup for that?

Also, what would the closest devices to the Evo Design be spec wise if I wanted to work on porting Roms?

Wow...40 views and no replies. Nothing for asking how to do stuff so I can contribute to the community but if I forgot to credit someone for their contribution I'd have everyone all over my case talking shit. This is why no one wants to develop this phone.

the biggest hurdle on this phone is that the developers didnt release any code updates for WiMax with JB release. this limits the dev to ICS and gingerbread.

What i would do if you are going to start tinkering with developing a custom rom is start with the ones in the forum links and use the toolkits available and make test runs with those.

the AOSP port that was working with minimial issues was going to be a starting point if i would go after it. Lots of potential on that ROM.

another post mentions the evo 3d may be similar enough to port from.

any work u do would be much appreciated... dont let the crankiness of a few ruin it for the rest of us

Thank you guys...nice to see there are still helpful ppl around. Well what would the best place to be to find a good writeup? Again, I've seen a few but all are Windows based. Thought Ubuntu would be better for dev work. Am I wrong?

I don't know much either, that's why I'm asking. I want to start giving back for a change. I've worked with iphone, motorola atrix, htc amaze and this phone. I've loaded every imaginable rom or mod for each and I've gotten to the point where I want to find out how they tick.

I'm not promising miracles or the best rom ever, just understanding how to do it so I can contribute however I can. Thank you everyone for your support.

I'm sure the information is out there. It would probably take a lot of sifting through xda or sdx developer forums

I just wanted to say...

Don't be discouraged by the lack of response of some people, by pushing forward w/ your project (this one or any other in life) the result will be...

The enrichment of your intellect and character, will shine so bright that those who are / were unresponsive and not supportive will have no other option but to pay attention, listen to your opinion and inevitably at some point... ask for your help.

learn kitchen on windows first, good starting point. when you get into advanced stuff you will see why you need linux :D

but learn kitchen first

I have kitchen installed on my ubuntu partition. its pretty easy to work with. I'll have to work it with more i guess :)
Funny thing with kitchen...I have gotten closer with manually porting a rom over than with kitchen's porting function. I always get status errors using that as opposed to doing it myself. But I can't get them to boot after installation. I tried flashing boot.img after installation and installing a native kernel. Neither work.

I'm with you man. I've had this phone for awhile now,and I love it,but the lack of options as far as roms go is disappointing. I too am trying my hand at development, I have a Linux virtual machine w/the kitchen installed. I'm having the same problem though,I cant get them to install. I've even been playing around with a stock image and just adding root support, but still the same issue(usually error code 0). Maybe we could try to work together and breathe some life back into this wonderful little device of ours!

I have just recently built and pc just for developing. I'm currently working on some projects for this phone and hope to have something for you guys as soon as I can but I'm new to this so I'll try my best. Don't want to release something half assed :D

I have a rom that installs with no problems, but gets stuck on the boot animation. I've flashed the boot.img after installation, and even tried to install a working kernel. I've wiped cache and dalvik as well. Still can't get past boot animation. I need some feedback

can be many things, its probably not the kernel... hard to figure out

I'm building from source so I'm building things from ground up. I'm not to experienced in the way your doing it. sorry
