Root ROM flashing question

I am new to the Droid X, coming from the D1 and ally. I'm used to flashing roms often, but I can't seem to get it right on this phone. I go into recovery and backup my ROM, then I do a factory reset and flash another ROM. Unfortunately, I get bootloops at that point and can't get back into CWM, so I have to sbf back to stock, root again, then flash the ROM I want.
Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Oh, and this happens when switching between MIUI gingerbread and cm7, or any ICS ROM back to gingerbread.

Some roms don't play together nicely. Keep a backup of stock and restore it before going to another ROM. Also, are you clearing cache?

there are no true ics roms for the dx just yet, but any rom on the rom/theme list you should easily be able to wipe data and cache and install them from any of the other roms.

Whenever I flash a Rom I wipe data/factory reset. Then I wipe the cache one more time. (data wipe also wipes cache too). Then I go into mounts and storage and I format system, format data, and format cache.

Then I flash the new Rom and whatever other files I have to, such as gapps. Once that's done I do one last last data wipe. This last data wipe prevents the dreaded hang on reg "M" or bootloop issue.

From what you say here the only thing I see you didn't do is a data wipe after you flashed your new Rom. If you don't wipe your data in CWM after flashing the Rom You will have to go into factory recovery and do it there.

To get into factory recovery, and guys please correct me if im wrong cause I don't go into factory recovery all that much, You will, with the phone off, hold the home and power key at the same time. Once you see the little droid guy and triangle let the buttons go.

From here you need to hit both volume up+down keys to get the menu. You will use your volume keys to scroll up and down the list and the camera key to select. From there you should know what to do. I see this mistake made allot. People will think they did something wrong and SBF their phone again.

When in reality you don't have to SBF again, just do the data wipe you forgot to do and you will be all set. Just remember to save yourself the headache and wipe your data again after you flash your new Rom and before leaving CWM.

Thank you, I didn't think of wiping after flashing the ROM. I'll try it out next time I switch roms. And is there a way to get into cwm when the power menu doesn't have it?

I was hoping for a button combo, but one method is as good as the other, I guess. Thank you for the help
