Root Rom Help

Ok so I had 2.3.340 ota yesterday, then I rooted using z4. I didn't worry about backing up my apps with titanium backup. So I installed bootstrap ran it and did everything I was supposed to n put rubix 1.9.5 on my phone n I made the back up in the recovery mode. So now what do I do if I want to try another rom? Boot into recovery n restore my phone then wipe everything n dl rom again or what? Thanks for any advice

Did that "everything I was supposed to put rubix 1.9.5 on my phone", include a backup of your previous (stock) setup? You'll need that for the next OTA. ;)

You can clear data/format then install your next rom. You really should install a backup program for file/app/logs/contacts backing up. There are times you restore a backup from months ago and those apps are no longer available on Market. Or you might restore a backup and your contacts/bookmarks/call logs/text logs are months old.

To install another rom follow the same procedure. And for over clocking, droid x overclock by jrummy

When you format, it erases everything except your sd card, where your backup and rom reside. Then when you install your rom, you don't have stuff leftover from your previous rom that might cause problems. It DOES erase all your contacts, call logs, texts, emails, etc too, so don't format unless you need to.

I didn't have to format to go from stock to apex 1.3 or apex 1.3.1. I would format if I was was going to install a different rom tho.

To OC I use jRummy's OC, QuickClock to undervolt and stress test with SetCPU, and benchmark with Quadrant.

I was running 1.35 @ ULV, then fell back to 1.25 @ ULV after some quirkiness. By using QC I was able to drop to even lower voltages. I'm was running these settings for 2 weeks until my wife crashed my phone repeatedly with Jewels so upped each of my VSEL settings by one.

thanks again, well what apps do you recommend i get then, and which ones will be free and which will cost money? the ones i need i mean and prob should get

jRummy, $1.50. Buy it try ULV and slowly increase the speed until you find some quirkiness, crash or something that tells you you've pushed too far. Only after it seems stable do you want to set it to boot. I wouldn't go any higher than the ultralow voltage.

Quadrant is free and might do a little stress testing.

SetCpu ($2) has a stress test you can run for 15 minutes if you want to see if your top speed is stable. I used that at 1.35, but still ended up with a lower setting later. I recommend it, but not a must-have.

I'd run this for a week or so, then try the free version of Quick Clock. I'm not saying it's not worth buying, but I find the manual method described in the above link seems more accurate at this point. I found it recommended a too-low setting that caused problems for me. If it helps you, then support the author by buying it b/c it is a good app, but still new enough where it needs some work.

Jw, what is the reason to using sbf? is it even necessary if you have a backup of stock 2.3.340 ota? And what is the point of mounting system data is it necessary to install roms?

A sbf is only needed if:

  • you installed a rom w/o a stock backup and want to get the OTA
  • you hosed your system files and are in a boot loop
  • you uninstalled VZ bloat like CityId or Blockbuster and now need the OTA
  • you need to update your system files, but can't get the OTA upgrade

Sorry, that's all I can think of now. Might be more reasons.
