Wouldn't it be nice if you could install an early build of CM9/ICS on your touchpad?

DON'T MESS WITH THE NOTIFICATIONS TOGGLE (when you pull up the notification bar and press on settings 1st time - leave it as ON) - if you do mess with it, then you will have to wipe data to reset because systemUI crashes and you won't have access to the bottom bar - from personal experience - had to figure out how to just wipe data of the systemui using root explorer without wiping all data to fix the situation

I'll be all over this when I get off work tonight. :D

Upgrading from CM7

Download Acmeinstaller2, CM9 alpha 0.5 from [Release][Alpha0.5] CyanogenMod 9 Touchpad - RootzWiki

If you haven't installed before, you'll need CWM and moBoot as well. BTW, moboot is version 3.0.5 now. Might be a good time to update. If you haven't installed CM7, see Getting started (CM7 for your Touchpad) but use these files instead.

Make a backup in recovery since this will replace CM7. Complicated info to triple boot webOS, CM7, and CM9 coming later.

Where to get gApps?

These should all work, but the first one I've seen used the most often:
gApps 4.03_v10 followed by the gApps fixer
gapps_ics_4.0.3_v8.zip MEGAUPLOAD - The leading online storage and file delivery service
Techerrata Downloads - Downloading gapps-ics-20111230.zip
goo-inside.me - gapps downloads

(I tried them all, but email was always broken until I did a factory reset.)

Wiping data?

According to Dalingrin, you shouldn't need to wipe data if using Acmeinstaller2 (don't use the original Acmeinstaller with CM9), but will need to wipe data if you install from CWM (recovery). From my experience, I had the best results (no FC's) only after wiping data.

Installing CM9:

Copy your CM9, gApps, gApps fixer (if used) to your cminstall folder.

From a command prompt:

novacom boot mem:// < ACMEInstaller2

My experience was that gApps wasn't installed (still in cminstall folder) so reboot into recovery and flash both gApps and the fixer then reboot. Open Market and add your Google acct.

Nova:
You might want to use this launcher:
[APP] Nova Launcher Beta (ICS based) - xda-developers

Download the NovaLauncherUpdate.zip and flash from recovery, then open the app and check for updates in settings.

Sorry guys. Never found a gApps that worked after an upgrade with my email. Guess I'm going to wait and maybe try again later.

Battery would not charge until the charger fix was flashed. Also factory reset did not work from A0, I had to do it from recovery.

I guess I was not the only who trying to find a working copy of GApps this evening... and I didn't have any luck either! Oh well... Guess I'll wait for CM9 Alpha 1.

Update: I think I figured out how to get CM9 Alpha 0 to install correctly.

What I did was as follows:

1. I re-installed CM7.1 Alpha 3.5
2. Went into Clockwork Mod and did a full backup
3. I rebooted into WebOS and copied update-cm-9.0.0-RC0-Touchpad-alpha0-fullofbugs.zip into the cminstall directory.
4. I copied the following three files into the root directory:
a. gapps_ics_4.0.3_v8.zip
b. gapps_fixer.zip
c. update-charger_systemui_fix-alpha0.zip
5. I rebooted and held the up arrow to get into USB mode
6. I ran Novacom with the command line novacom boot mem:// < ACMEInstaller2 to install CM9 Alpha 0.
7. I booted the Touchpad into CM9 with no errors
8. I rebooted into Clockwork Mod and installed the GApps and update zip files
9. I rebooted into CM9... no errors.

Steps 1 and 2 are optional but gave me a stable baseline to restore, if necessary.

The battery on my Touchpad was starting to get low so I dropped it on the charger and will mess with it more tomorrow.

I used the GAPPS fix in the link you sent, around page 6 or so. Worked fine. Everything seems to be working well except wireless. I connected to AP fine and it worked, then I rebooted and and it says connected to wireless, but I have no internet, doesn't show I am connected in the status bar either.

In CWM I backed up, wiped, then installed CM9, the gApps provided on XDA (sorry I don't have the link this morning, androidforums wasn't working for me yesterday when I did this), and also Nova launcher and everything is working well for me including WiFi.

Mine worked great and I did the same install through ACMEInstaller2. Used the same GAPPS posted above... all went great... except I can't get Facebook, Twitter or Android Pro Widgets to work.

I don't use Twitter or Android Pro Widgets, but Facebook is working fine for me.

Mine is now too... I deleted Facebook. Rebooted. And then downloaded again. Then set density to 140 so it looks like a real tablet now. It's so nice. I'm a big ICS fan. Now if we can get it working on the DX I'll be a happy camper.

Why is the density better at 140dpi than 160dpi?

Toggling WiFi takes a long time for me. I do it to conserve battery. Does anyone else see this problem in CM9?

if market worked we'd run @ 132

You want to avoid non-standard dpi or you run into Market issues. I wish I could find the standard ones tho. Saw them the other day.... about 4 of them (multiples of 10) and I know 160 was one, b/c that was the standard for the Nook Color.

I see Alpha 0.5 has taken place of Alpha 0: [Release][Alpha0.5] CyanogenMod 9 Touchpad - RootzWiki

Alpha0.5 Release notes:

This is a minor release that bundles fixes that were previously a separate download and a few other things:

I reinstalled Alpha 0, and still had trouble with email then saw Alpha .5 so updated to that and still had email closing on me, even tho I could see it with the email widget. So I booted into TWRP and did a factory reset and installed gApps 4.3v10. Everthing worked fine except Titanium until I changed the setting to use the system busybox.

Restored all my apps, but they didn't show up in Market until I cleared data (settings... apps... market), then they were all recognized.

It's working quite nice now. Just made my first CM9 backup in recovery 'cause I'm sure I'm going to screw it up. It's running too nice to stay this way. :D

Looks promising, but I am going to wait until its at least in beta. I am pretty happy with CM7 for now.

I assume you are aware that the available versions of CM7 for the TP are also ALPHA versions (the most current of which is ALPHA 3.5)...

Yep, but I have to support 2 TPs (mine and my wife's) and CM7 3.5 is pretty stable (except for a few Wifi Issues). From friends who have installed CM9 on their TPs, I hear its very promising, but no where near as stable as CM7 3.5 alpha.

I was thinking the same thing.... :D

To be fair, you're more likely to have issues with apps with CM9 than CM7 due to it's newness and not many phones using it.

OTOH, I think I recall hearing battery life is improved with CM9.

So far I'm not finding a lot of seriously nagging issues with CM9. The camera doesn't work (but we already knew that) and HD video doesn't work (which we also knew). WiFi seems to be more stable than CM7. As for battery life, I'm thinking the jury is still out on that one. I charged my TP yesterday. Took it off the dock last night, upgraded to Alpha 0.5, played 3 or 4 SD Youtube videos and battery dropped down to 92%. Let it sit overnight and the battery was down to 80% this morning.

I have not had any major uses with the alpha 0 build. Don't know if I just got a good download or what. I only had 1 reboot after running for over 4 hours, and doing some pretty heavy lifting. Browser closed once after being online for about that same time too. LOVING IT!

I've got some issues with email.

When I view my work Exchange account, I only see 4 of the 20 or so folders. CM7 sees all of them. If I open the email widget (which I like), it can see all the folders and lets me pick on of the absent ones, but then it comes up empty.

Still, it'll do until something better comes along.

I took the plunge this weekend and upgraded both my HP touchpads from CM7 to CM9 and am very happy. The only issue I had was the launcher was hard to use, and did not have any options, but thanks to colchiro's post about Nova, its perfect. My wife plays a game called Word with Friends and on CM7 was always getting kicked off the Wifi and had to reboot. On CM9 she says the wifi has been rock solid.

The only Con we both noticed, was battery life does not seem to be as good. I read a few other posts over at rootzwiki with people noticing the same issue and supposedly it is going to be addressed soon.

Over all I am happy with the upgrade, and can not wait to see them get this Rom rock solid!

Thanks for the help Colchiro and Martimus!
