Root [ROM] LG Motion Year 2014 - updated v.1a

Initially I was going to make a fresh stock ROM from firmware G then I realized apps were outdated so I added updated Apps. Then I realized LG Motion Launcher is too simple so I changed that to a newer version.

Eventually I kept going and going and changed whole bunch of things. I also changed sounds, keyboard and wallpapers. Instead of having simple stock ROM I ended up having updated Motion year 2014 version :)

It's about time, give your good ol motion some new dress (IF you still have Motion lol :))

Zipaligned, Deodexed, Debloated
Loki-patched Insecure Kernel

INSTALL

I recommend you to have version G installed. It may work well with other versions but I am not sure..

1. Download the ZIP file then copy it on the root of external-SD card.

2. Go to CWM by clicking Reboot Recovery @ 2nd-init Recovery app

3. Switch to the External SD mode by clicking Home button.

4. Back up your current rom to your SD card if you haven't done it already.

5. Wipe data/factory reset

6. Wipe cache partition

7. Advanced -> Wipe Dalvik Cache

8. Mount and Storage -> format /Cache

9. Mount and Storate -> format /Data

10. Mount and Storage -> format /System

11. Install Zip from sdcard

12. Choose the .zip file you downloaded and placed on the SD card

13. Wait until installation finishes.

14. If you see any error during installation, DO NOT reboot.
Restore your phone with pre-made Nandroid backup.

15. If install was success Select 'Reboot System Now'
** See below

16. First reboot will take longer than usual.

17. Once it boots, set up your account & test all functions.

** Warning **
If ROM install finishes in 1 second, then there's something wrong with the install even though you see the success message.

There should be some delay when CWM installs this ROM especially when it says 'Installing System Apps and Files.'

Some people tend to skip formatting Cache/Data/System but I highly recommend to do these steps with this phone and this ROM.

UPDATE LOG
07/31/2014 - Version 1a, Google Playstore & TTS bug fixed. Apps updated
07/28/2014 - Version 1 initial upload

made too much changes at the end... boot stuck ><

ok calm down bard... patience patience..

Nice. I'm not using my Motion any more, but I'll keep an eye on this thread and maybe flash it to 'er once you have it up and running. Right now she's sittin' up in the closet. I'll also have to recharge the battery.

Download link is up.

So far the phone is working okay, it's snappy, clean and neat.

New LG Home and Keyboard are more robust than the original Motion apps, not to mention additional themes for versatile looks.

Let me know if you encounter any issues. Thank you!

I tried to take it for a spin but was stuck on the LG screen, even after a factory reset. I was on firmware G and followed your directions to a tee. I'm unbricking now and will give it one more try tonight or tomorrow. Thanks for something new for the Motion by the way :-)

Awww.. sorry to hear the boot stuck.. make sure you format cache/data/system. Just to be in a safe side, try to do it from both internal SD and external SD as well (hit home button to switch)

If you stuck at the Metro PCS, it's when phone is initializing, it will eventually boot after. But if you stuck at LG Logo, that's not good.

still no luck. I tried the formatting internal and external SD stuff, but still the same result (stuck at the LG screen). I'm going to try it a time or two more without formatting certain parts and see if I can get anywhere. Question: if I perhaps got a bad download of the ROM zip, would I be able to install it, or would it just fail? I am able to install it all the way through and it says success; I was just wondering if a faulty download could be my problem. Do you have the md5 checksum (i think that's what it's called) to see if I have a good copy? Thanks Bard

When you install, does it actually write files to the systems (takes a bit) or quickly passes all the steps?

Bad file might be an issue... I usually use d-h.st but the file is over 500mb so I used google doc instead.

MD5 sum is e79a090efceb1d669e130872400af551

I will post this on OP as well.

As far as the install goes, what kind of time is "a bit"? The install process takes around 10 seconds, maybe slightly more to get through all eight steps.

I checked the md5 sum and my copy is verified legit. Hmmm, I'll try a time or two later tonight.

Anyone else out there successfully install (and boot) this ROM? Just curious if I'm the only one that can't get this to work.

Hmm... that sounds all legit, it seems like the ROM file is actually installing files not just bypassing in 1-2 seconds..

And your MD5 sum is also correct.

As you suggested we will have to check others and see if they have same trouble or not.

Well, I was able to get it up and running on my out of service Motion. Since I stopped using it, in favor of the Moto G, it's had CM10.something on it (pg's port of CM to the Motion). I had to charge the battery even so I could flash this.

It stayed on the MetroPCS screen for maybe 3 to 5 minutes, but then I was greeted with setup screen.

So one thing I found was that it wouldn't remember that it had updated google text to speech every time I reboot the phone. Also it'd loose the Play store updates and revert back to the older version. Finally I went into the apps and cleared cache, cleared data and force stopped the play store. I then went into the play store and let it re-sync and show that I had all the apps on the Motion. Then I rebooted again. This time it stuck and didn't tell me to update text to speech.

Thank you for the feedback. It seems like there's something wrong with including those in /system/app folder. I will check this issue.

I redownloaded the ROM and I got it to work this time. Happy happy, joy joy ;-)
Thanks Bard for all your help.

Yeah! finally. Enjoy updated apps let me know if you have any other suggestion / feedback. Thanks!

Yeah, I'm having this issue as well. I tried deleting the data and cache like aflick3 suggested, but it seems to come back after a reboot or two. Any idea on how to make this fix stick for good?

It seems like Play Store needs little more work than simply copying on top of the older version. I will search around and see what can be done to fix this issue.

yay~! fixed the playstore error and TTS error.

updated version 1a comes with the most recent playstore (when did they roll it out??) and chrome apps

download link is up!

if we have the previous version do we need to factory reset and all that jazz, or just wipe cache? I have bad luck with factory resets :D

Definitely going to take this out for a spin. Glad to see someone still has some love for the motion.

PS: Would the be a way to get this rom without all the calling features for added battery saving. I tried myself a few times but I usually either brick it or get constant force closing of most apps.

For installing any rom, it's highly recommended to factory reset and install on clean environment. Previously installed files may bring undesired effect. So yeah.. please do the factory reset before installing this ROM.

Umm.. what do you mean by calling features? Give me a little detail or example, then I will research it :)

I think he means he doesn't want the dialer, messaging, etc apps. Probably not active and wants to use it wifi only, so he doesn't want any app that strictly requires active service or data, thereby extending battery life. Just my guess anyway

You hit it right on the head. I'm looking to upgrade soon to a more powerful quad core device so I'll be retiring my Motion but I still want to use it for Social media, emails, etc over wifi. Just want most of the cell features removed because there's no point in it searching for service where there is none.

Just put the phone in airplane mode. I use one of my old phones(lg spirit) on wifi only in airplane mode and the battery lasts about 7-10 days. This stops it from searching for service.

Wow thanks for this! just lurked back on the ATR board and saw there is still motion action going on! I am still using my motion as my main/only phone, and just flashed this rom.
So far everything seems perfect!

I don't know if this is a good place to ask but..
1) can i still mount my sd card as main storage device like i could on stock/bobz rom? (really liked having phone run off sd)
2) will johhnys AOKP baseless/ other baseless roms work ontop of this? (gunna test and see how it works, will edit with feedback)
3) Where do you live so i can order you a pizza?

Thanks again!
