Root ROM MANAGER backup problem

Hello all.
I have a problem that I do not know how to work around or fix.
Steps i take to try and BACKUP CURRENT ROM:
1. open 'rom manager'
2. click 'backup current ROM'
3. (phone reboots normally)
4. i re-open 'rom manager'.
5. as a check, i open 'manage and restore backups'
(nothing is listed)

-i do not want to install roms because i am afraid if i do, i will not have any way of getting back to my orignial rom because of the backup problem.

HELP!

I'm not a fan of ROM Manager. I feel it only causes more headaches. Install Koush's bootstrapper (it may be on the market) and install recovery this way. From the app, hit Reboot Recovery. This will take you into the bootstrapper application. Scroll down to backup and select it. Then go through it until it begins backing up. Now this backup will be on your SD card in the clockworkmod folder under backups.

IMO, one step better than bootstrapper is SafeStrap. There's a tweaked version over at XDA that is phenomenal. It allows you to switch between systems meaning that there is always a failsafe if you mess something up. For example, you can try a ROM on the safe partition and if you mess it up and it boot loops or whatever, you can reboot into SafeStrap, switch to your nonsafe system (meaning your good, permanent, nonsafe to test on system) and have a functioning phone. I have Liberty3 running on my nonsafe and play around with CM9/ICS on the safe system since it's still an alpha build and lacks a camera.
