Root ROM Manager news and questions for the triumph DEV'S

Saw this from Koushik Dutta The ROM manager guy over at G+

"ROM Manager 4.8.1.4

This is a fairly minor update, but one I am pretty happy about:

More Support: Developers are porting recoveries to devices faster than I can add support! I've been getting a lot of requests about "can you add support for X into ROM Manager?"
I've fixed this by enabling generic/unsupported devices so they are able to use ROM Manager. However, ROMs may not show up in the list of downloads for unsupported devices, and you will need to have flashed ClockworkMod recovery manually.

Less Ads: I found the startup and registration ad shown when ROM Manager was opened was causing the load time on ROM Manager to be excessively slow. If it was annoying me, I'm sure it was annoying users. I also feel that signup ads and full screen ads cheapened the ROM Manager experience.
So, I just removed that particular ad network altogether. That ad network was generating around ~$1000+ a month in revenue, around ~$15000 a year. So, I hope you crackflashers appreciate it :)

If you are a ROM Developer and you haven't listed your ROM in ROM Manager, you really should! It's super easy to sign up and host ROMs on the free ROM Developer portal:
ROM Manager Developer Portal

Ok now for the questions. while it detects the ROM i'm using (cm7 reloaded) no matter what I do it says "you have to flash clockwork mod recovery first " which i have already of course done

The last update was supposed to support unknown (unsupported) devices. I tried it, but it doesn't seem to work for us.

When you pick flash recovery (or whatever that first option is) you can pick unsupported and a CWM version, but the choices are 3.xxx and 2.xxx neither of which work when you pick them.

When I chose 3.xxx it works for me... Although I have just tried rebooting into recovery from rom manager and it did.

Edit: Ok so I tried flashing a zip through it and it just rebooted into recovery...

So pretty much, it doesn't do anything more than we can already do. :(

pretty much :/... I emailed the dev to see what is needed to get the MT supported so hopefully I'll hear back soon.

Edit: also how can we get officially supported by CM?

we have to follow there build process witch seems to be very difficult.

Plus not enough devs support this device.

I wanted to find out if anyone got it working before I bought premium..thanks... but did anyone add the ROM to the developer portal?

That I don't know. That should be done by the dev of the ROM and noone else. But seeing as how it isn't working correctly on our phone, it is not necessary.

Yea, plus when Rom Manager works properly it can be a whole lot easier than downloading it and flashing... You can have Rom Manager download, backup your current setup, wipe your phone, then flash the rom. That's the power up a fully functional Rom Manager, unfortunately it doesn't work for us... For newer people it would be easier, as well as having all the roms all in one place would be easier as well instead of having to scroll through the forums trying to find the roms. So there are actually lots of advantages of us being officially supported.

as far as I know, Rom Manager MEANS well, but ultimately causes more problems than it helps with.

advice is dont use it, ESPECIALLY since the Mt isnt officially supported, you have to do all these workarounds and still flash the rom manually.

not. worth. the. trouble.

Ok right now I would'nt use it since it isn't supported and the only thing it can do is go to recovery... I have never had a ny problems with rom manager on my G1, or when I had my OV, and it does make it worth the trouble when Devs start putting roms ups and you can just scroll through a llist of roms.

it would make it easier to tell noobs to just get rom manager and let it flash the rom for them

Well, I think all of us were noobs at one point. And we figured this out with some help. I would rather walk people through stuff than rely on an app whose developer doesn't have time to support us specifically.
I remember how long it took to get a response when Isaac inquired about getting the Triumph supported. I don't care to use an app who doesn't have time to support it fully. I understand he is a busy guy, and I know how that is, but I like support if needed.

I can do all of that now, it only takes me booting into recovery. All the ROMs are linked in the All Thing Root Guide and have the official versions from the developers themselves. I know other phones that ROM Manager will completely screw up and They also have ROMs posted that were not put there by the devs. That isn't good for newbies, in fact it means more of a mess.

/agree

It works fine on some phones, but others it causes more trouble than following directions.

From a new user standpoint it causes more trouble than good for the OV. I have seen countless threads and heard from users/members with that phone that they wish it had never seen the light of day.

That is one of the devices that has the ROMs put there by someone other than the dev. You have no idea what is in them when that happens as you cannot check the source code.

But it would make the forums(especially the ROM threads) dead, even when a lot of people are using the ROM...

I don't know what kind of troubles you guys are running into with this, but aside from nothing showing up in the ROM downloads section, everything works as it should. Backup and restoring nandroids works as well as flashing zips from sd card....and after buying the premium version, I now have it set to automatically backup my ROM once a week
