Root ROM Manager Question

I have the ROM MAnager installed and I have tried hands on downloading ROM's and the UI that allows to try out new ROMs.

What I dont understand is the first menu option that appears when i start the app " Flash ClockworkModRecovery". I clicked that for 1st time and it then started to show Current recovery 3.0.2.6 and latest recovetry with the same version beneath the menu option in smaller fonts.

So what does this really mean and clicking again to this option will mean what it';s doing in the background as I have managed to backup/restore and install new ROM's without seeing any significance of this menu item ?
 
That just installs clockwork mod recovery as the default recovery image. In a nutshelll, it installs a piece of software which lets you flash custom ROMs. I think tapping it again would install the latest version (if one was available).

When you backup and restore via ROM Manager, it takes you in to clockwork to do it.

Have you decided which ROM you're going for yet?

Yes I have got LeeDriod on the phone now...it's working fine so far other than the main menu that's not too smooth and scrools one page at a time..
 
That's just the way the apps menu is in Gingerbread, it's a bit of a pain at first, but you do get used to it.

As I said in a previous post, you've done all the hard work, if you don't like LeeDroid, changing to something else is mega easy.

So as you said in your last post, you switched to CM7 recently so which one do you prefer now having played with both the ROM's ?:rolleyes:
 
Up until very recently, I would've said LeeDroid, but now I'm not so sure. CM7 is faster, looks nicer (the fancy window animations) and allows for more under the hood tweaking. The flip side is that it's vanilla Android and that is very basic. With LeeDroid (or any of the Sense based ROMs), it's virtually the same as HTC's offering and some of the Sense widgets make Android a lot prettier and easier to use.

If they could sort out a decent camera app on CM7, I'd say CM7 is far superior, but the stock camera is tripe. There are alternatives, but for one reason or another, I think the Sense/LeeDroid camera is probably the best/most balanced I've used on the phone. It's not to say it's great, it's just the one I've had least issues with.

To summarise, I'm probably 70-30 in favour of CM7.

A lot of other camera apps allow you to pre focus by touching the area of the screen you want to focus on; the CM7 camera doesn't allow this. As a consequence, it focus's before the picture is taken meaning the delay between taking the picture and the button being pressed is about a second. This is way too long if you want to take an "action" shot. You can set prefocus on or off, but it doesn't make much of a difference. The options are also pretty basic.

I don't know whether or not the pictures were of a lower quality, I didn't give it much of a chance to be honest.

The MIUI camera is installable and better, but still not up to the camera included with Sense.
 
OK, I have been playing around with CM 7 in the last one week so thought of sharing my views with you before switching back to LeeDriod today.

Firstly, as you said, it's pretty much vanilla without high end sense capabilities. the UI is good but that credit goes down to ADW than the ROM itself. I found the gallery app very pretty as it cascaded pictures in folder format and in 3D so i have managed to find it as a standalone app which is now working on my LeeDriod so removed the original gallery using Titanium.

I must say though the camera function does offer pre-focus and it's not effective, i wasn't taking professional photo's anyway so wasn't to hooked up with the1 sec time delay. In terms of picture quality, I got the same MB of the photo when taken for the same scene on Lee an CM7 so no big issue.

However, the major problem I found has been around the sound playback. I have the paid version of PowerAmp application that I use with my Bose in ear IE2 hearphones. It gives immense capabilities to tweak sound output that my Ipod or any other player can't so it's really fun. What I noticed on CM7 is that the SRS Enhancement and Dolby Mobile don't work on CM7 as selecting them brings no different to the voice whatsoever. So not sure if it's the software to use that set of chipset when those options are selected are rightly programmed.

Im now back on Lee as I can't compromise sound quality and given that the other UI enhancements are anyway available on other ROM"s also through market. Would you agree ?
 
Fair enough, CM7 isn't for everyone.

I did notice it was quieter than LeeDroid, but it was as loud as I needed it to be. I flashed the LordMod Kernel which improved the audio slightly, but it was still quieter than LeeDroid/stock.
