Hi I am thinking of updating to a custom rom for the first time. I am currently on Android 2.2.1 rooted and I am thinking of going to Velocity 1.2. My question isn't really about the update process, although if you guys know of a guide for complete morons that would be great. What I was wondering was how I can not lose all my apps, and app data, after updating. I was thinking that Titanium Backup is the way to go, but I have only ever backed up my phone. I've never had to restore it. Also after I do a factory reset, will I still be rooted?

You dont need a factory reset to load a rom, you just wipe everything from recovery (which is different than a factory reset). Rooting is dependent on the OS, and I think most all custom roms are rooted so when you flash velocity you will have a rooted OS when finished.
I would use titanium backup. restoring is pretty straightforward, it gives you the option to restore app only or app plus data. if you want to keep saved data just pick the latter. I think to do batch restores you need the paid version so if you only have free you have to restore one app at a time I believe.

I am sure someone will reply with one of the several guides to flash a rom, but basic process (after downloading the rom zip file to your sdcard) is this:
1 Install a custom recovery (i used rom manager to load clockwork mod since it was a little easier for me)
2 Reboot into recovery (note this uses hardware keys and isnt the most intuitive so read up on how to use whichever one you choose to load)
3 in recovery, make a nandroid backup so you can go back if you need to
4 in recovery, wipe data, cache, davlik, .android_secure
5 in recovery, choose the update or flash from zip option
6 when it says complete just reboot

Even though the free doesnt include Hypershell for fast restoring, all you have to do is do the click install and done on each app. Still faster than redoing them from scretch. TiBu highly recommended!

Yes, when you install a custom rom you will lose the apps and data. It wipes everything from the phones memory. Like it was said, just use Titanium Backup to back everything up. Once you install the rom, reinstall TiBu and restore your apps and data. If you follow the steps given in these comments to install the rom and restore your apps, you will be good to go.
