Root [ROM][RC][4.4.4] SlimKat 12/22/2014

@phenomx4
I can't flash this to save my life. Did a hash check, it was a clean download. Tried wiping everything multiple times, still failed. Tried flashing it after cm11, and also carbon, still failed. I dont know what else to do. Here's the excerpt from the recovery log.

U have to flash after a regular wipe coming from another rom

I have already tried flashing from carbon after a factory reset. Always a failure. I've also tried flashing after a factory wipe with cm11, and Pac. Still fails every time. Unless TWRP was updated in the last day or two, then I definitely already have the latest version. Are you just doing a factory wipe in TWRP? I've been doing a factory wipe, plus an advanced wipe of the system, dalvik, cache, and data. Maybe this is causing my problem? I wish I knew why Slim behaves like this.

Has anyone done a recent download of slimkat? I also had an issue flashing ONLY it and none of the other 4.4.4 Roms, but I also didn't download that one until much later than the other three.

i do system wipe in twrp make sure u have latest i did and some how it reverted once i notcied it i flashed to latsted and ok now

I finally got it to flash. I had to install Carbon first, then while still in TWRP, I just did the normal factory wipe option, then flashed Slim + gapps. Using the advanced wipe options before flashing Slim was causing the failure.

Well it would seem that that would mean the ROM is depending on something to still remain there from a previous KitKat ROM in order to flash successfully.

Yeah, I agree. I think it has problems creating the file structure. It seems like it acts more as a rom "Slim down" rather than a Rom by its self. I really wonder what causes the dependency, and if it can be corrected. I'm thinking it must be a problem in the scripts, or it simply doesn't carry every asset it needs to install properly. I was very impressed with it though. I was really hoping it had most of the options that Carbon has for customization, because I love how small the rom is. The size just blows me away, and its super fast. I would definitely consider it a daily driver. But theres just a few things that I can't get over with the cyanogen builds (minor things really), like the single nagging pagnation dot when theres only one home screen. And that there's no auto rotate with the home screen or app drawer. Other than that, I like to use trebuchet as the launcher, I avoid launchers like apex, nova, etc, as I believe they use unnecessary permissions, and I have privacy concerns. I avoid nearly all gapps for the very same reason. I only use the playstore and nothing else from them. I'm too neurotic.

Still wondering if anyone has a grey charging rectangle with slimkat. I think I will flash the boot partition from carbon and see if it fixes it.

Actually did all this last night. Just now posting.

I thought I would try flashing slimkat differently then I have before. This is the steps I took coming from L Awe inspired ROM. Note L inspired ROM is not based off of 4.4.4.

Reboot into twrp
Wipe everything except external SD
Reboot recovery
Factory wipe
Install slimkat, minimal gapps, supersu and extreme beats.
No errors.
I then flashed the boot partition from a backup of carbon ROM that I have.

Everything boots and loads fine. Only thing I can see so far is that WiFi is broken.
As far as the grey rectangle charging block with the phone off it is back to normal.
So as far as slimkat needing another 4.4.4 ROM to be installed to work I would say is not true. Does it need some dependencies to have WiFi or possibly other things? It appears so.

Update:

Rebooted into twrp
Backed up
No wiping of anything
Flashed slimkat, minimal gapps, supersu, extreme beats.
wiped cache/dalvik
reboot
WiFi now works!

Not sure exactly why it behaves this way but maybe it can help others. :)

Factory reset in twrp doesn't wipe system which is y it flashed... Wifi drivers are built per kernel hence wifi broken... U reflashed slim which flashed slims kernel which fixed wifi... I already stated the script needs fixed...

Yes I know it does. I just didn't know the kernel is located in the boot partition. I am not a developer. Just pointing out that it doesn't need another ROM for it's dependencies. Great work on L awe inspired by the way.

Its a script error... So by dirty flashing ur leaving residual files in system partition... Some file is trying to be symlinked thats not in the slimkat rom... Phenom should fix this:)

In the steps I took I formatted everything except the external SD and then rebooted recovery and did a factory restore before flashing. By doing this there should be no more files in system because I wiped them the previous time in recovery so I don't think it's using previous symlinks. I hope it does get fixed so it can just flash like normal and the ugly Grey charging bar gets resolved. Love this rom but I can't use my talkatone program on it too well because I believe the audio cancellation feature it not implemented in this rom which with it enabled causes the program to crash and having it off gives an echo to who I am talking to. So I am back on your awesome awe inspired 2.9!
