That's exactly what the stock recovery is expected to do. You should still be able to boot the normal way.

Had I been informed of that utility I may have been able to restore the phone, but now that I did that last flash, it won't. It doesn't stay on long enough for the application to do anything.

Anyhow, I returned the phone and got a replacement. What is the safest "rooting" procedure, with the Ally? I refuse to flash the rom again after what happened, but I'd like to at least have root capabilities. I used Super One Click, last time. But I hear that it's not the safest/best route.

Super One Click? I don't even think this is supported on 2.2 on the Ally. In my first post, I said this ROM was for people who had gone through a specific 2.2 rooting procedure.
I don't think you spent enough time doing your research before you dove in, and then when you messed up your phone of your own accord, you left LG to pay for it (Verizon did the exchange, but they were a middleman to LG's warranty). I don't agree with this. If you followed the approved process, linked in a sticky at the top of this forum, I don't believe you'd have ended up where you did, and I don't think the route you took to fix it was right. When you tinker outside of approved methods, you take responsibility.
I don't mean to sound like a jerk, but this is my feeling on the subject.
Since this is no longer about the ROM (indeed, you "refuse to flash the rom again"), please look for help elsewhere. This thread is no longer the place.

I didn't spend enough time doing my research, and yes SuperOneClick does work to root 2.2 on the Ally, I just did it with my replacement.
Yeah, it was out of line to cause LG to land up with the dead phone on behalf of my stupidity, I don't deny that and I haven't denied that. I know where I went wrong and I'm sure I could avoid that, but I'm not going to try again until I do tons more research. I'm sorry I offended you in that manner.

Unfortunately, all versions of Byron are legacy and unsupported. I was working for a while on a project built on 2.2.2 which I was calling ponder, which would have become (something like) Byron 5, but it never became completely official.
Odexed apps, when updated, are stored deodexed in /data in the same way they would be if they were not system apps to begin with. This is why I was pretty diligent about updates during Byron's small popularity. Unfortunately, as that popularity faded, so did the project.
I hope you can still enjoy the work. If you are somewhat adept at tinkering (not necessarily a dev, but comfortable flashing and working at the command line), I can find a way to provide you my last version of ponder.
Thanks for the reply and clarification on the affect of updates. When I installed Byron I had to scramble the first time entering the market to prevent the odexed apps from auto-updating.
I'm running a full install of Byron with the apps I'm not interested in backed up and then frozen by TiB.
I'm encountering an issue with the Wireless Tether app, it force closes when it tries to initiate the hotspot. Superuser has never prompted me to grant it root permissions so I suspect the app is attempting to perform "root-only" activity without the required permission grants. Any thoughts on how to resolve this? I downloaded a very similar app of off the market: Open Garden Wifi Tether and that one doesn't have an issue and super user did the initial prompt for permissions as expected.

Are you using the Wireless Tether package from the first post? I had on-and-off problems with it... It's something related to files in /data not getting the correct permissions when installed as a system app (thus, the binaries that actually enable tethering can't be installed, and therefore it doesn't get so far as asking for root). The same app is available here: android-wifi-tether - Wireless Tether for Root Users - Google Project Hosting and works if you install normally.
I'll get all of my files together and get back to you. At the moment I'm up against deadlines at work.
The intent of this rom was never unclear---it's stock-like. I would call it "optimized" rather than "updated".
Feel free. Byron does not directly compete with Velocity, they have distinct goals.

I've got a couple of questions; I've already tried flashing the froyo radio using the supplied instructions. Funny, because I was referred to the radio flashing instructions as a way to root the Ally, but I'd suspect that rooting and radio flashing are two different things? Problem is, while I was following those instructions, the process failed... over and over again. I had to find some alternative method to root; so is it likely I'll end up facing the same issues now that my phone *IS* rooted?
I've just heard some really bad things about this process - like it's about the only thing you can do to an LG Ally that risks bricking it completely. I have no issues following instructions to the letter, but my experiences have been less than optimal. The expected outcome is rarely the result.
I'd really, really like to try out Byron Bare. My smartphone has already started to complain about low disk space despite clearing app data, deleting unnecessary stock apps, and moving what I can to my SDcard. I'm willing to try this again, but what are the chances of the process working on the fourth attempt when three others have failed?
Update: the radio update and flash back to stock took another three attempts before it finally succeeded. Failed to apply the ROM on the first two attempts under ClockWorkMod, too. I'm surprised I don't have a paperweight on my hands now, but it looks like everything worked. Success. Hecka nice ROM, too. My jaw dropped when I went to the apps panel. That is EXACTLY what I was after. Donation? Wish I could afford it; but if I can scrape a few bucks together, I'll keep you in mind DarkxSun. EXCELLENT WORK!!!

I'm glad you got everything working, and that you like the ROM. Sorry it took me so long to reply; I've been busy with research (4 years into my PhD), and I haven't done any Ally work in years, so I needed to get back up to speed on the problems you were asking about.
As an aside, I thought I had a copy of a (slightly) newer version of Byron that I never tested enough to release (I had planned on sharing it with you in case you wanted to try it out with no promises), but I can't seem to find it---it may have been lost in one of several hard drive failures. I know you weren't expecting it (since you didn't know about it), but sorry nonetheless that I couldn't find it. It wasn't much, just an update to the newer firmware base, and I guess there wasn't much exciting in the 2.2.1 update anyway, so it's probably not a great loss.
Though I don't ask for donations, I also don't tend to refuse if offered a beer. However, the offer seems particularly misplaced in this case since I can't repay it with too much in the way of support for Byron (I don't even have a working Ally anymore). If you enjoy it enough that you feel it's worth it, despite full awareness that new versions are most probably not forthcoming, there is a small donate link in the main post. I'd graciously accept, but it means even more that you liked the work enough to consider it to begin with.

...I just wanted to say that you are a cool dev. I love the way you responded to this user. I pop into this Forum to feel the nostalgia of my days with the Ally. Glad to know that after all this time you are stilling hanging out in this Forum offering up something to the rare Ally owner.
