ROM replacemnt process

Hi

I have just rooted my sensation and am now running a custom ROM. Took me a while to re-download all my apps and configure wi-fi, syncs, etc.

If I want to replace or upgrade this ROM in future will I loose all me apps, settings again or is there a way to make the replacemnt less painless.

I am new to this so as much detail / plain english in your advice would be appreciated.
