[ROM] Velocity V1.0 | LG Ally | Android 2.2.1 Froyo | Super Fast | Stable

This looks really cool and I can't wait to upgrade to Froyo and get this. (I've been waiting till a 2.2 version of Velocity came out since I'm right now using Velocity .4 on Eclair).

Is it possible to install Adobe Flash in anyway? I know there's SkyFire, but it doesn't let you rewind a lot of movies, particularly ORB streams. The ORB app isn't all that great and .3gp streaming is really low quality in anything but perfect 3g or wifi. Using a friends Droid with flash, ORB streamed beautifully in pretty good looking quality. I don't know how far Adobe went to lock out phones that "don't qualify" but is it possible in any way to install it or the drivers/requirements for it? If the Ally can benchmark up with the Droid X, you'd think that it would be capable of handling flash.

I noticed a few days ago that the Navigation app on my phone has disappeared...strange.

It's kind of been bugging me, since I use it semi-regularly, but I don't want to do a fresh install of Velocity just for that, and I only have one recovery made, which is the one I'm currently using. Otherwise, no problem.

Re-downloaded the RAR to see if I could snag the apk, but don't see it in there, and can't find it anywhere else as a standalone app.

Any ideas? Not a huge issue, but a minor irritation.

Anybody have an issue with screen rotation at the home screen when you slide the keyboard open / shut?

I found that right after a reboot the screen rotation is quite fast and doesn't cause any major problems, however if the phone hasn't been rebooted in a while the screen will take about 10 seconds to rotate. This is something I can live with, I am pretty patient, I know theres a lot of recalculating and redrawing required for the icons and all.

Heres the real bad problem though:

You receive a text message or email while keyboard is slid underneith the phone, you open the app and reply then slide the keyboard out if you are typing an lengthy message. If you back out of messaging or e-mail and still had the keyboard slid out and quickly slide the keyboard in before your apps/widgets appear, about 50-75% of the time you will get the homescreen caught in a refresh loop where your phone/app drawer/browser bar will continuously flash and your apps / widget will never appear forcing you to power cycle the phone.

You can also replicate this problem at about the statistical rate as above by sliding the keyboard out on a home screen and sliding it back in before your app icons / widgets appear.

I can't seem to get script updates. I believe I'm still on the original scripts, since I've never updated and every time I go to update it says that the scripts are up-to-date. Could this be because of the server change?

Edit: forgot to su beforehand. problem solved

First Thanks for the hard work just some info have an lg ally 2.2.1 froyo rooted phone running GNM's amonra recovery flashed Velocity V1.0 phone would show the LG screen make it to the verizion screen and then reboot over and over again. restored backup and is working fine. Any suggestions out there? Thanks

While trying to follow the froyo 2.2.1 guide I discovered that the android_winusb.inf file, in it, is outdated and won't work with google usb drivers revision 4.

So I updated it so I could proceed, and figured I'd save you the trouble.

Log into your myverizon account online, they'll be there, as I know if you didnt resave them onto your google account, you'll have reenter them from the myverizon website.

Well, finally made the jump and installed Velocity 1.0 (after using stock Froyo). Pretty good improvement over the old 0.3 I'd used...

Few things, though. Slightly dismayed by the stock camera and gallery apps still being on there... with all the improvements, I'm surprised these two dead-awful apps are still the norm. Camera always takes a great "flash preview" on screen, but then takes a terrible, washed-out flash photo due to the camera constantly re-compensating instead of locking in the values during preview/focus. Gallery ticks me off by loading images in a 3D texture at a fixed resolution, so you can never zoom to view the full image detail without using a third party app... plus, Gallery intrusively noses through all SD folders, pulling out app temp folders and files and cluttering the gallery view. Damn, I cannot believe these apps have not been fixed since the initial release of the Ally... :(

Pretty impressed by the new "velocity" script, though. All the neat functions rolled into one. Few initial impressions that could use some tweaking though: first, if "su" is required for pretty much anything to work, I think "velocity" should prompt for SU if it isn't being run from an elevated prompt. Second, it's very difficult to tell what these functions are going to do without activating them ("LCD density" is one I first poked my head into)... but then when you activate them, often there's no way "out" of them without unintentionally modifying a value (I was immediately asked to "enter an LCD density" and had no idea what to enter, since the current value wasn't shown!). And to top that off, if I hit "enter" without a value, it accepts it, making me think all is well. Next morning, just sitting in standby on my desk, my phone randomly reboots and now I have micro-fonts. Oops. Easy enough to fix, but these little "wait, I just wanted to read about the value, stop it!" things are all over the settings... I just want to poke around, not edit things ;)

And I'm also having recurring issues with the Home screen "hanging" on app-switch... something that's been happening since the 2.1 days. WAY too frequently - almost every time - when I open an app, play around in it for a while, then hit the Home button to open another app... the home screen loads, is half-responsive, but has no icons or widgets. It takes about 5-7 seconds of just sitting there with the background and the "screen dots" highlighted, to actually get the icons back on the screen. Sometimes, swiping the blank screen around seems to make it load faster. I can't tell if it's a widget, an app, a shortcut, or what it is. Is there any way to isolate the problem there?

At any rate, excellent work, all of you. I can already tell my phone's much more responsive than the stock ROM, much less BS junk running in the background (HATE Amazon MP3!), and it's just a lot nicer to work with. Thanks!!

Time for another update! YAY!! I've been running V1.0 since it came out and I have to tell you I'm still amazed with it. Between the performance enhancements, the graphics (don't think I hadn't noticed the darker stock wallpaper and overall theme, I had and I like) to the useful tools preinstalled and the garbage apps uninstalled, it is just great! I wonder if there's like an LG dev that is running a Velocity Ally cause he knows that stock is really just horrible? Hmm. Food for thought. So here's my month long view of Velocity 1.0 for Froyo. Very stable, I should mention that first because some people have never played around with an unstable rom and don't understand just how nice it is not to have to pull the battery out of your phone on an hourly basis, this rom just runs and that's great. The overall color scheme is very cool but also dark and that helps battery and screen life, though instead of just darkening a few things they found a way to make it look just so.... well, COOL! I'll just say the word SCRIPTS. It would seem that everybody who has looked at them is as impressed with it as I am fantastic job with that too. Enough said about that. The preinstalled apps like Youtube and DSP, awesome! I would also recommend the Gingerbread keyboard, it's very useful and I think a little easier to user than the standard one but I'm just adding my $0.02. Snappy, I know that a lot of people say that and usually about like a Droid 2 or an Atrix 4G but, to anyone who has used the stock Ally, you'll know what it means to say that it is snappy now. There's obviously way too much to mention and this was supposed to be quick so I'll leave it at this but to anyone not sure whether they can benefit from this Rom or not, let me tell you, it's tits! You will fall in love with your phone again, or for some, for the first time! Great work, awesome Rom with amazing features and add-ons, a real home run. Let's hope that when/if Trident gets back into things he keeps his ambitions just as high because there is no doubt that we all win when he plays in our sandbox!!

I am in the process of improving upon/adding more of those "Script Info" options you see floating around. The LCD Density does tell you what the default value is set to. And in general if you press X on any screen it will close the script.

Code:
        clear
$BB echo "This script allows you to set your"
	$BB echo "LCD Screens Density"
$BB echo "Changing the density will essentially"
	$BB echo "change the resolution"
	$BB echo ""
	[B]$BB echo "Default is 240"[/B]
	read DENSITY

Thank you so much! I can imagine the effort that went into such an awesome finished product.

The only bugs I've noticed are in the velocity script v18 when in 'Set LCD Density' and 'Toggle stagefright' the screen isnt cleared before the ROM Utility menu is displayed. Not to odd from toggle stagefright, but kinda weird that it happens from the lcd density list since thats not in the rom utility menu.

So I have finally rooted my ally and Am installing Velocity

I am at the boot screen right now I can't wait till it loads

EDIT so after being stuck in a loop.... I searched the forums here and found the answer and got it to work.... its awesome thanks you guys

I've been fiddling with the ROM, something I enjoy... I noticed that I had 'car home' listed twice in TiBackup so I wiped and reflashed thinking I missed something, but they were still there. I used the script to backup/remove and still had one listed. I used Ti to remove the remaining one then used the velocity script to restore the car app and it isnt working. I dont use it at the moment, but its something that you may want to look at.

Also, in the velocity script under both remove and restore sys apps, the 'main menu' list item isnt seperated from the rest of the items like it is in the rest of the menus. I hope I'm not sounding anal, but I am about my own code... Scratch that thought. I made my donation so dont mind sounding a bit anal ;-)

I'm having issues with the tethers. The wireless is only giving me local access. The wired is disabling Usb debugging & read/writes to the sdcard without doing anything else. If I stop tethering then usb & read/writes are enabled again. I'm using vista (spits). And yes, I have flashed and reflashed. Edit: I shouldnt need new drivers but I may need to point my phone to ones I've disabled. Which drivers does the wired tether use?

I REALLY like the manage sys apps section of the script!

Maybe we could get a 'what not to remove & why' list for velocity. I'll start it out:
Dont remove Pico TTS or TTS Services if using text to speech
Dont remove Kickback, soundback or talkback if using respective accessability options.
Dont remove anything DUN if you use your phone for networking. (SO DONT REMOVE)

Anyway, keep up the good work.

ive been looking for a way to add sound to a boot animation. i know you can do it on other phones. my question is how about the ally/velocity??

I suspect all that would be required would be code added into the later stages of booting up, but keep in mind that, just like a PC booting up, there is an initial period where things are not yet in place to run the code needed. So you might have to run it at the very end of the boot cycle. Perhaps some of our wonderful devs could elaborate on this?

The vzw splash plays sound by default so based on that id think it was possible. That and the fact that ive seen guides for a few other phones

Hey, you're right! Been so long since I used a stock ROM I had forgotten. :p Surely our devs could make it work the same way. What would be really cool is if they could make it user-configurable so you could just tell it to play whatever file (like MP3) you selected. :)

maybe placing which ever sound you wanted in the folder where the original sound was and named the same thing would work. kinda like how you can switch out the fonts.

That might very well work indeed. The trick left, then, would be to learn what the OEM file name was and where it was kept, presuming it is in fact an audio file and not digital code which is embedded in the phone's "BIOS" equivalent.
