Root Roms and Overlocking

Ok so i just rooted my phone thanks to these forums the guides were extremely helpful. Now im moving on too overclocking and adding a rom to my phone. I cant seem to find anything here about overclocking my droid so if anyone could help me out with a guide it would be really helpful.

Is that all i need to install a ROM. Also i dont fully understand kernels. Are they necessary for roms/overlocking? what are they used for exactly?

As far as how to install a ROM, look at the thread I started about n00b ROM questions. The_Chief pretty much walked me through the process, as of 3/5/11 (older resouces might yield outdated results, like installers and apps that no longer exist). As to overclocking and installing a kernel, I have not attempted this yet.
