Root Roms, roms, everywhere!

Ok, I have been rooted since day 2 of owning my CDMA Milestone (Droid 1). Tried Cyanogenmod 6.1.2, thought it looked too "cartoony" for my taste. Currently running BB 0.6.2, LP2 (looking very gingerly). Runs smooth, battery life is ok, not great. Had some minor issues here and there, but pretty satisfied.

Now, looking for the next rom to try and want 2 key ingredients:

SPEED & BATTERY LIFE (in a perfect world, right?)

Other than Cyanogenmod and Bugless Beast, what is the BEST rom that balances Speed and Battery life (yet doesn't look too bad either)?

[Side note, possibly for another post: I THINK I deleted my original nandroid backup from stock. Is there a way to get a STOCK backup? And no, my network, Cellular South, does NOT have 2.2, so I'm only looking for a backup of 2.1 stock Eclair.]

Also, I keep seeing Chevyno1 kernel. How does it stack up to say BB's pre-installed governor as far as battery/speed ratio?

Several things to note:

1) Full backups of stock ROMs can be found here: Peter Alfonso or from the ROM Manager app: ROM Manager - Android app on AppBrain

2) There are multiple kernels available from each developer, with different speeds. YMMV as to which one works and which does not - based upon speed, low voltage settings, etc. I can say that most kernels out there are faster than the stock kernel (550 MHz for Eclair, 800 MHz for FroYo). But, they come at a cost - battery life.

3) You'll have to play with these things yourself - each DROID is somewhat unique in that some can easily run 1200 MHz kernels and some have issues even running at 1000 MHz. Just because this person says this kernel or that person says that one doesn't mean squat b/c they don't have your DROID in their hands.

4) The battery speed ratio is also going to be something that you have to play with. Not only are our phones slightly varying from person to person, the number of apps, the types of apps, and other factors, like number of SMS you keep in your phone, etc. will all play a factor in how your battery lasts, not to mention your personal use of the phone etc.

I've only toyed with a few rom's personally, (Started by jumping onto the Cyanogen train, but for whatever reason, it didn't agree with my phone) Since then I went to Charity ROM v11 (You can find it here in the forums)

I can't say enough nice things about Charity, it's fast, and I noticed that I get roughly an extra 5 hours of battery life vs stock or Cyanogen
It comes with one of Chevy's LV kernels baked in, plus I'm sure there's some other tweaks to the system to squeeze every drop of battery life out of it.

I keep thinking about hopping around and trying out some of the other ROM's, LFY keeps catching my attention, and so does MIUI, but call it a combination of laziness and happiness with what I've got now that keeps me from switching. (although, I'll be jumping ship once someone gets a finished, stable gingerbread ROM out there)

A couple things that I'd recommend that seemed to give me more speed, and fixed the issues that I never mention when I'm telling my iPhone packing friends why their phone is inferior to mine;

I know it's controversial, but I've had huge success with the local.prop edit to fix my homescreen redraw problem

  1. Fire up your Android Terminal Editor
  2. Switch user to root by typing su
  3. Output the contents of this file: cat /data/local.prop. If you get an error about file not existing, then proceed to step 3. Otherwise, jump to step 4.
  4. Echo (add) the following line to your local.prop file: echo ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=1 > /data/local.prop. Reboot your phone and you are all set.
  5. If step 2 produced the contents of the file, check to see if you have the ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=1. If not, use a text editor to add it in at the end of the file. Reboot and you are all set.

I also just recently started using Zeam for my launcher, and things seem even snappier now (I tried LauncherPro and although it was nice, the speed and responsiveness just wasn't "there" for me.)

Sorry if this seems kind of rambly and incoherent. It's first thing in the morning, and my coffee hasn't quite sunk in yet. Hopefully I've been helpful.

Well, I tried LFY 95? and Charity 11.1 last night/today. LFY didn't have the look for me, Charity was much slower than expected and looked too much like Sense (had the hero as my intro to android). So, still shopping while running a satisfactory BB 0.6.2. I'll try Zeam launcher as well.

Not to be biased at all  but UD2.5 is as close to the ideal ROM as I have found for my Droid. Everything works and works well... and the array of customization options is almost endless. While UD3 Gingerbread is still in beta (and is not ready to be my daily driver yet though many people are using it), if it NEVER comes out I'll be perfectly satisfied with UD2.5.

Well worth taking a test drive for a few days.

Im normally been a fan of CM, but with their latest release in beta, going to hold off until they came out with a fully functional and stable GB release.

As of lately, Ive tried UD, sourcery, and BB but wasnt happy with them for various reasons.

I just flashed Project Elite the other night and I havent been happier. Been running perfect so far!

I agree 110% I'm really happy with UD 2.5 best ROM I've run on my Droid

Haven't flashed UD (was going to sample 3.0, just to get the gingerbread goodies). Ironically, my original rom was a toss up between PE & CM. Might have to give PE another look. Thanks!

Alright, just got done flashing PEv4 and getting it the way I like it (thank you Titanium Backup!). So far, digging the interface, widgets, and uber-overclocking awesomeness (blasted N1 2.2+ in Quadrant, but don't think I'll keep it at that speed...I kinda like this lil guy). Gonna give this one a day or so to really try it out, then on to UD 3.0 Beta (just for kicks). Thanks for everyone's input!

Not sure - it seems from the OP that the owner has an actual DROID not a Milestone, unless there were milestones that were CDMA also....

Yes, running cdma milestone on Cellular South. Currently on PE 4
1, loving it! Only drawback so far is battery life. Seems to drain a little faster than what I had with BB, even when running "power saver", low 400, high 600. Any ideas?

+1

UD 2.5 is the absolute best ROM I've used. Speed, battery life, etc...It's all amazing. If I never put another ROM on this phone I'll be okay with it. After a year of searching for the "perfect" ROM I believe I've found it.
