Root root access without unlocking bootloader

is there any way you can gain root access without unlocking the boot loader and all those other things I just want root access I'm not interested in Roms just yet

If you still haven't received an update to 4.3, there is actually a way to do this. What version does your Nexus 4 have on it?

I'm on 4.3 :/ I know about framaroot but i heard it doesn't support 4.3 I just don't want to risk messing my phone up by messing with the bootloader because I just want pi controls and have only had this phone for a month

Yeah, at this point unlocking the bootloader is the only way to obtain root. It was actually coincidence that framaroot worked because I don't think that it was intended to provide a method. Developers tend not to search for exploits for rooting Nexus devices because the bootloader is so easily unlocked.

if I unlock my bootloader can it mess up my phone because all i really want is pi controls?

The nexus is designed to be easy as pie to root, and well as very easy to save if something goes wrong.

Its pretty hard to actually "brick" your device where it isn't usable anymore.

With that being said, its still a good idea to ask questions before trying it. We can point you in the right direction and give you step by step instructions if need be

If I root and unlock the bootloader and than get pi controls can i unroot and relock the bootloader and keep pi controls

Other than possibly having issues setting up drivers, unlocking the bootloader is fairly easy and there almost no risk at that point. There's a couple of toolkits if you use windows that automates most of the process of unlocking and rooting so that all you have to do is click a couple of buttons and you're good.

Ill think about it but can I undo all of that and keep pi controls

I think pi controls require you to keep root access, but you can re-lock your bootloader if you desire. Once rooted, there's an app on the play store that will let you lock and unlock the bootloader whenever you want without the data wipe.

Also, the other day my phone got stuck when I pressed the back button it stayed grey on the back button as if i was still pressing it usually if I press the home button it fixes it but it has happened to me like 3 or 4 times since ive had it just a glitch or should i be worried?

Will rooting make my phone slower permanently? like if i unroot will it stay slow or damaged in any way? Also which toolkit do you think is the safest?

The phone shouldn't be that slow unless there's a rouge app eating up resources. When you unlock your bootloader, it will wipe your device clean (this is a security thing Google has on Nexus devices) So if anything, rooting is going to speed up your device because you'll be starting fresh. Rooting shouldn't change the speed of the device in itself and shouldn't damage the device in anyway if executed correctly.

Wug's Nexus Toolkit is one of the more popular ones and is usually the one I recommend.

Okay! So I've successfully rooted but there's this one problem I heard the only way to have pie controls and not have a nav bar is by using a rom , what ROM has pie controls?

Paranoid Android is the first one to implement pie controls, but I think CyanogenMod also has a slightly different set as well. So either of those or another rom based off them like P.A.C-MAN would be a good choice. Just remember to make a backup in recovery before flashing just in case something doesn't work, download the correct version for the Nexus 4 (Mako), and perform the necessary wipes(factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache), and flash the correct gapps after the rom.

Where can I find those Roms and some say they're for 4.2 can I still flash them even though I'm on 4.3....some mention something about flashing radios? What does that mean?

Yeah, you can downgrade back to 4.2.2 if you so desired. The easiest ways to get the roms and gapps is to download the goomanager app from the play store, browse compatibile roms where they're organized by developer. You can also download gapps from them. you want the jb gapps dated 08132013.

If you're rooted, you can also use it to install twrp recovery by hitting the menu and tapping install openrecoveryscript.

Is goomanager 100% safe because I ran into a ROM that said milestone isn't that a Motorola phone?....I'm hoping it was a glitch but I ran into a ROM that said mako it was a aokp rom

Just make sure you're looking under the first option which is browse compatible roms. If you're under aokp, milestone is a name they give to their stable releases. They're considered to make very good roms, though I'm not sure if they offer pie controls. I haven't used one of their roms in a while. If it's under mako, then you should be good.

So if I look in compatible Roms there won't be any 4.2 Roms right?

There will be, but it's not a big issue if you want to use a 4.2.2 rom; it should flash with no difficulty as long as you use 4.2.2 gapps with it. aokp hasn't released a 4.3 rom yet, but Paranoid Android has and they're the ones with pie controls that you want. They should be in the list. I used 3.97 at one point but they might be on a newer build now.

Yeah, flashing the correct gapps is paramount because it includes a lot of the google framework necessary for a proper experience. So is everything up and running well?
