Root Root after instlaling CM9?

I got a replacement triumph after my last one was habing some hardware problems.
I put on clockwork and then installed CM9, and remembered I never rooted it. I'm trying to now the way I always have, via terminal, and it fails and says read only file system.

Any ideas?

I'm also getting freezes in CM9 where it then restarts, and am wondering if this is because of the lack of root.

Just put stock rom back on and tried to rook and now i get 'link failed Permission denied'
any ideas?

Cm9 is already rooted as are every other custom rom for the MT. You don't need to root your phone.

CyanogenMod 9 will not enable root access by default, now a user-configurable option | The Verge
It seems as if it will be a user configurable option in the setting of cyanogenmod but I think you're good for now,at least until you flash a build made after today

As of now, like marc said, it comes with root access. You do not have to root before flashing the ROM.
