Root Root after upgrading to 2.3

adhityaps

Newbie
Hi,
I have my DESIRE upgraded to 2.3 Gingerbread few while ago, I much enjoyed it. battery life from my opinion is better, screen slicker, and boot faster in the start. But still... my main problem about this phone remains. too little room for application in internal memory.
I browse around and found that CM7 might answer this problem, and I try to find step by steps guide to getting CM7 to my phone, but I find dead end. I cant root my phone through unrevoked, nor gain S-off.
maybe someone could help, how can i root an upgraded HTC desire so I can install CM7 ROM?

Revolutionary will give you s-off. The ability to flash custom recovery and then roms, h-boots etc.
Just remember to check pvt size as you may want amon RA instead of cwm.
Enjoy your desire

Yeah, once you've done Revolutioanry it's easy (I've got cwm with no worries).

I'm running CM7 on my Desire now, and with S2E "low on space" is a thing of the past :)

how can I get amon_ra into my desire? i tried clockworkmod by rom manger, there's error message "an error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands".

really need help here :(

First thing first. Have you checked the pvt size. You may not need amonra and if you don't clockwork will flash when you run revolutionary.
To check the pvt you need to download terminal emulator of the market. And enter the following "cat /proc/mtd" (note space between cat and /)
This will confirm erase size of 20000 or 40000. If 40000 you need amonra
Once you now this you can select the relevant recovery flash.
You can download the recovery from allsorts of places. Best one go onto the desire all about root section of this forum, find the thread "guide to rooting with unrevoked by suroot and he has all the downloads you could possibly want.
Once you have what you need run revolutionary and then fastboot flash the recovery and away you go.
Have fun

Hi Paul,
i must tell u that previously when im still in 2.2, I had no problem rooting with unrevoked. but now my desire has gone 2.3 (with official RUU) I cant use the same root method with unrevoked. it says "root failed, ur firmware is too new"

Itried revolutionary and get the s-off, the problem is it wont install the recovery, so i cant proceed to CM7

do u familiar with my problem?

i must say thank you for ur kindly attention before :)

You cannot use Unrevoked. Only revolutionary, which if you read the documentation doesnt install recovery. Once S-off you have to do this yourself. Now if you answer Pauls question about PVT and erase size, we can tell you which recovery best suits your needs, then guide you how to flash the recovery.

its 20000. thanks before man:)

If you follow the red link in my sig (once per page) there is an adb and fastboot faq. Skip the adb bit as its irrelevant. You can work out what you need from there

Follow suroot instructions and use android flasher it is simple little utility that will flash everything via fastboot. Once you have flashed your custom recovery your good to go on any rom you want.

i tried both flasher on SUroot's thread, both of them hang while it says flashing recovery. just to be clear, where should I put the amonRa 2.0.1 i've downloaded? on my c: drive or on my sdcard? should i rename it or something?

The file needs to be on your c drive. As for reasons for it hanging I'm not 100% sure but I would start checking the various items such h-boot drivers on your PC and running through su's guide making sure you have covered it all.
Sorry I can't help any further but I'm sure others will be able to

i tried with command prompt it says "FAILED <status malformed <1 bytes>>
any idea?

and one thing, when i run flasher, my desire connects to PC in normal or hboot?

Are you definitely S-off. The reason for asking is revolutionary asks if you want to install a custom recovery and as you are 20000 you can say yes and it will install cwm.
What do you get when you boot into recovery? Does it say revolutionary at the top.? Can you select recovery and if so what do you get.?
To install with android flasher you need to be in fadtboot. Can you confirm that you were.
Sorry for all the questions but I'm struggling to figure this one out

That means the recovery image is dodgy or you're not in fastboot perhaps. Re download it.

Not normal or Hboot. Fastboot.

I think Im definitely S-off Paul, as I can see on my hboot screen. (pink "revolutionary" in the top of the hboot screen, is that u refer?)

Actually, revolutionary did asked me to download and install recovery cwm (it says internet connection needed to download&enter, and im definitely connected), but when i press enter is says error and the program forced to close.

when I select "recovery" on my hboot screen, the screen shows phone image with green circle (identical to "sync" symbol) then it switch to hang with red triangle symbol.

please explain fastboot state you've been meaning in order to use flasher

I dont mind AT ALL about ur questions Paul, as im really grateful to have somebody so kind to help an oxy-noob as i am. Im eager to find a way to install CM7 to my desire so I can have larger capacity to install app to my phone.

many thanks
adhitya

I think that is bang on. I remember I got this malformed message once I tried to give fastboot command in hboot mode.

Select the fastboot mode and not the hboot mode in boot screen.

this was all the fuss is all about. i shoul've been thorough before. Now i enter the fasboot (not only Hbott) and im recovered instantly. i hope i can take it from here. thanks a lot guys, ure very good men:)
